    1: Why Newsletters?

As I start to write this my Gmail’s Promotions tab has 1492 items in it, and these are the ones I want to keep! I promise myself, I’ll take 10 a day, maybe 25, and read the newsletters, filing away the information or making notes for the future. Eventually I’ll get back down to Inbox Zero, right? (To contrast, my actual working inbox hovers right around 50/60 emails, all client work or items that I’m saving for a predetermined amount of time like that delicious honey garlic chicken recipe I’m going to have next weekend for dinner.) If my inbox looks like this, and I keep a pretty firm hand on it, then why should you start a newsletter?

That’s a good question. It’s one that you should be clear on, which is no doubt why you’re reading this. So let’s look at the reasons why you should have a newsletter.

    Direct access to your readers

I am a huge proponent of not building your business on someone else’s platform. If you need an example of that, look at Facebook. For all the good a Facebook page does you—and yes you should have a Facebook page—your posts without paying to boost their visibility only reach 1-3% of your audience. That means if you have 1000 people like your page, only between 10 and 30 people will see the post. If the post performs better, through comments, likes, and shares, then Facebook may decide to show it to more of your fans. However that’s like asking a monarch for permission to do something. If it pleases Your Majesty, may you show my post to more people? Like most overlords, Facebook will say only if they’re paid.

    A newsletter is different.

Think of the information you’ll give to someone. Your first name. Your address. Your phone number. Your email address. If you’re like me, you would give out your first name and your email address before any other pieces of information. After all, if you don’t like someone’s email, providing the person or company is complying with the laws in their country, then you can unsubscribe. If you like their content, then it comes directly to your inbox. You don’t have to lift a finger.

A newsletter gives you the rare opportunity to walk up to someone and get in front of their face to say, hi, here’s what’s happening with me right now. You go to them, where they’re at, and they see it no matter what time they check their email. Social media doesn’t afford you this opportunity.
