My roots go back to a small estate deep in the Mountains of Mourne, near the Silent Valley, in County Down, Northern Ireland.I went to school in Dublin, drank way too much, studied English and history, then business, then IT at Oxford University. While a student, I worked as a kitchen porter in a club near the Bank of England. Later I worked in IT marketing for 25 years, much of that time in London. The Istanbul Puzzle was my first published novel (HarperCollins Jan, 2012,) The Jerusalem Puzzle was my second, The Manhattan Puzzle my third with HarperCollins. I then self-published The Nuremberg Puzzle and The Cairo Puzzle to complete the series. In 2007 I won the Outstanding Novel Submitted award at the Southern California writer’s conference. The Istanbul Puzzle was also shortlisted for Irish Crime Novel of 2012.I have also self-published three novels in a historical novel series, A Dangerous Emperor.I founded the International Dublin Writers Festival in 2015. I also help promote and support other writers through BooksGoSocial, a book promotion business I founded in 2013.I still enjoy looking at the stars and listening to the stories of strangers..

    Introduction

This book provides a summary of the latest thinking in the currently critical areas of online book promotion - the easiest way to sell books in any crisis.

Please dip into the subjects that most interest you and come back for the rest when you can. By focusing on one area at a time, you will build a deep knowledge of what it takes to succeed in book marketing in difficult times.

If you are daunted by the range of things we need to do as an author these days, please implement the suggestions in each section slowly. Each section can be read in a few minutes, but implementing what is suggested will take longer.

Once you have read the entire book, you will have almost everything you need to succeed, except your own book of course. That is in your hands.

    Chapter One.

5 Essential Pieces of Advice You Need to Hear Before You Publish

So you know you want to succeed as a writer. You have something to say, and you want to get the word out about your book.

There are a lot of things you need to take into account if you want to publish successfully, especially if you’re doing it by yourself or with a smaller publisher.

At BooksGoSocial, the author marketing agency I founded, we asked over 1,000 independent and self-published authors what they would do differently now they’ve had their book (or books) published. We received over 500 responses. We compiled the responses to summarise the essential pieces of advice other authors suggest you might need to consider in advance of publication:

    1. Editing is Very Important

This came up again and again and again. You may think you’ve mastered spelling and grammar, or believe Spellcheck will save you, but you cannot trust yourself to know when something is as good as it can be.

Paid editing is essential, not just in terms of proofreading, but also to make sure your book flows, has pace, and makes sense!

The comments in italics below are directly taken from author responses:

I will continue to go the self-publishing route for my second one, but I will hire an editor to work on the text. There are passages that could have been deleted or reworked.

Beware of hiring so-called ‘qualified’ friends to edit your book.

If you can’t afford an editor, there are a few different options to help, as outlined by one author:

Get a physical proof copy first and check it thoroughly. Keep getting them until you have got your book as best you can. Put it through the BooksGoSocial editing process. Only then publish the book.

    2. Marketing can’t be avoided!

It isn’t enough to just write a
