In her new book, Settle For More, published in 2016 by Harper Collins Publishers. Megyn Kelly tells us her journey as a reporter and how the 2016, presidential race proved to be the hardest months of her life. Megyn is an anchor at FOX News Channel and l tells us about her journey covering the election, interviewing the candidates and moderating presidential debates. In this book, she tells us how the race to the White house would dominate her whole year.
She was raised in upstate New York, where her parents always taught her to be herself. Her parents always told Megyn and her siblings that they would love them the same if they achieved or failed. Because of this, she was never under pressure to achieve and this enabled her to be herself and focus on what motivated her and what made her happy. She lived simply and honestly following her parent’s footsteps. In her family, they showed each other love not by being falsely polite but by laying their guard down and saying what they really think.
Megan talks about her mother who she adores. She is a woman with a good sense of humor and lights up the room wherever she goes. She never pressured Megyn over academic and extracurricular activities because she saw that Megyn was doing fine in school and seemed happy. That was all she wanted. She was also very proud of Megyn and took every opportunity she had to let people know she was her daughter. Her dad on the other hand was a very intelligent man, who wanted Megyn and her siblings to love learning. He taught her a lot of things and corrected her when she was wrong but he was never overly strict about it. The author also mentions her grandmother, Tebby, who was also a very interesting woman. At 100 years old, she is full of life and does not hesitate to give Megyn her opinion, good or bad.
Megyn and her siblings were raised to take care of themselves. When she asked for breakfast at five years old, her mother let her know that she was old enough to make it herself. In those pre-helicopter-parenting days, she was often her own primary caregiver. However just because their parents gave them a lot of freedom, they didn’t run wild. They knew right from wrong and knew that there were consequences for misbehaving.
Apart from making her obey the law and common courtesy, Megyn’s parents never tried to rein her in like many parents do these days. She could do whatever she wanted to do if she didn’t hurt or offend anyone. She could do anything even in public and her parents let do it even if it was embarrassing. They let her whole self shine. So much of what we think we’re supposed to do or how we’re supposed to act comes from our parents. Megyn is very grateful that her parents did not try to box her in. They helped her be self-sufficient and encouraged her to break the rules here and there.
Megyn’s mom taught her not only to take care of herself but also to stand up for her siblings and her friends. She always told them a story about how she beat up another kid for messing with her baby brother when she was in middle school. Megyn’s recalls how her older sister Suzanne took very good care of her. She was always thoughtful and tried to fix things if Megyn was sad. She likes to think that she
