    Prologue

In the prologue of Tim Alberta's book he recounts a particularly impactful day in his life, July 29, 2019. He describes the hectic schedule he had been keeping while promoting his book on the transformation of the Republican Party and the rise of Donald Trump. This day, he was in Washington, D.C., for a final interview at the Christian Broadcasting Network, discussing the alliance between Trump and white evangelicals despite the president's controversial behavior.

Alberta, who grew up as the son of an evangelical minister and in a conservative community, found himself struggling to explain the support of evangelicals for Trump. He understood that their attitudes were diverse and couldn't be easily generalized. He attempted to address this complexity in his book and during the TV interview.

However, the day took a tragic turn when he learned, after the interview, that his father had passed away from a heart attack. He reflects on his last interaction with his father at a book party, where his father warned him about the fleeting nature of earthly glory.

The experience at his father's funeral further complicated his feelings. He was confronted with comments from church members more focused on his political statements about Trump than on his father's passing. This culminated in receiving a critical letter from a church elder, accusing him of betraying his faith and country through his journalism.

Alberta decided to shift his focus away from political journalism to study the turmoil within the American evangelical Church. He explores the historical and contemporary definitions of evangelicalism, its entanglement with American politics, and the identity crisis within the church. He emphasizes the need for Christians to resist idolatry and worldly temptations, reflecting on his personal journey and observations from his extensive research
