THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO YOUNG PEOPLE

    LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF!

    Chapter One

    ––––––––

I guess it is proper for me to introduce myself.  I am Thaddeus Chambers.  That’s right, I am a twelve-year-old boy who enjoys being a kid and yes I am a kid to the very inch of my nimble young body.  Not only do I enjoy being a kid, I also love politics.  I know what you are thinking! Why would a normal twelve year old have any interest in that subject?  I do not know what to say except that is the way it is.  Some people follow football, others watch basketball and I really enjoy politics.

And what about the possibility of meeting the President of the United States?  I could shake his hand and say ‘Sir I have something I need to tell you’.....and of course he would listen because no president wants to offend a little kid!! That sure sounds like a great idea.......right!  I wonder if I could do that.  Just sit right next to him and say what I think.  I know it’s a long shot but you never know.

Do you think I could make that happen?  Do you think that is why I wrote this story?  Well, let me tell you more about my story

    first.

As you read this you might think I had nothing better to do than write a diary or some kind of story about what I do every day.  Not really, but not too long ago I said to myself, why not write a few things down so I can remember when someone yells at me and says I did it when I did not do it.  I think that makes sense.  You know how it is.  People always believe you if you write it down, so why not?

Now the question is what should I write down?  I could make it complicated by coming up with categories and listing things and then deciphering everything that I write to see what fits in which place.  Or I could just write down what I think is important.

That is simple and makes sense.

    So where do I begin?

Like I said I am twelve years old.  That means seventh grade if any teachers care to know.  Yes I am one of many in my family.  Two older kids and one younger.  That means I get to be a bug to my older sister and my older brother. I cannot be mean to my younger sister because, well it is against the rules, but also because she cries too easily. Her name is Courtney.  Just the other day I tried to submerge her toy horse in the bathtub.  She cried, thought the horse would not come back up.  When I pulled the horse out of the water she yelled, you mean!  That is okay; she hugged me before we went to sleep so I guess she is not mad at me any more.

How old is she you ask?  She is nine. I also have a sister that is three years older.  Kathy Lou Anne.  Oh I love to pick on her.  I call her squirt face. Why do I call her squirt face?  You ought to see what she does with her face when I squirt her with tomato juice.  Oh yeah!  Then there is my smarter than the world older brother.

He is sixteen and talking about college. Yikes! And yes he gets all A’s.  Of course I have to keep him honest.  Every time I get a chance I get him to do my math and science work!  I do not like math or science so all I need to do is stare at him when he explains some oddball set of numbers and then he says okay Thad, watch me as I work the problem.  I try to look as dim wit as possible so he believes I am desperately in need of his knowledge.  It is a great trick.  One of my friends at school told me that he probably is not fooled by me but that is okay it works still! Oh yeah I forgot to mention.  My brother’s name is Matthew.  Right from the Bible.

I guess I should have told you from the beginning that we are a church going family. To be quite honest I am not as clear about religion as my parents are or for that matter my older brother or sister. They got baptized and got involved with church stuff a long time ago.  I am a little bit slow.  I think there is a God but the Bible can be pretty tough reading so I think I will wait a few years and then get gung ho.  My brother and sister describe themselves as Christians.  I guess I have not figured that out yet.  My dad told me I do not have to worry yet.  Just stay out of trouble, go to church and do well in school.  That is what he says will keep me out of trouble.  And yes, be nice to Courtney!

So where do we go to church?  A Baptist church down the road.  Why do we go there?  Well I guess it helps to know the guy in charge.  No I am not talking about God this time.  I mean my Uncle Frank.  Ya see, Uncle Frank Chambers is the pastor of the church.  At least the main one.  You might day my dad feels like it is a good idea to go hear his brother preach.  Now that I think of it, it is probably something like what I do to get Matthew helping me with schoolwork.  I think my dad admires him a lot and wants to hear what he has to say.  I know what you are going to ask.

Did Uncle Frank marry my mom and dad?  No. Unfortunately he is a few years younger than dad and was not yet able to do that when my parents got married.  Twenty years ago Uncle Frank was somewhere out west.  Oh I forgot to tell you something else.  I live in Austin, Texas.  Uncle Frank was in California for a few years so no he could not marry them.  But anyway we see him enough now so I do not think he is too worried about it.

So you want to know what my dad does for a living?  I thought you might ask.  He is a computer programmer.  I guess he puts a lot of information into computers and checks them on a regular basis.  My mom is home most of the time.  I think she does some kind of sales at home.  One thing that is really cool about my parents is that they like each other.  Now sometimes they get goofy and smooch. I look the other way when that happens.  They always tell me wait until you meet a girl Thaddeus! I say, I am not looking!

James Randolph Chambers met Deanna Lynn Bishop in college in Kansas.  Mom says they were college sweethearts.  Yes they have been married twenty years.  Not bad for a couple of adults!

Okay now you know something about me and my family.  What else can I tell you about my life?  I already said that math and science bore me to tears.  I did not tell you that I love history.  Oh yeah.  I grab any book I can on American history.  You gotta remember politics and history are like very tight brothers.  They really need each other.  To feed my political obsession, I follow the governor and the president.  Sort of.  Now I have to admit I do not always understand what they are talking about, but I listen very closely!

As long as I can remember I have been hooked on the major political debates.  I even watch the cable news shows.  All of them.  I think I like Fox New best.  Prettier girls I say.  I can hear you now saying....wait a minute..you already told us that girls were yuck!  I mean to kiss and hug.  They are great to look at!  Oh yeah.  I love brunettes.  Thank God my sisters are both blonde.  I can at least tease them about their hair color.  Oh yeah your right not the younger one.  But one day when I am on my own I will ....you might say have a lot of catch up work to do.

Anyway.  I love watching those political shows.  Mom and dad sometimes say things like Where did he get that from? Under their breath of course.  That’s okay.  It makes me a very unique young person.  My older sister is a cheerleader.  My younger sister wants to be a cheerleader, she thinks and my older brother is a whiz with computers and gadgets, just like dad.  That means I have to be something else.

The other night I was watching two people debate about immigration.  The one guy said that too many are crossing the border against the law.  Of course that is not good. The other
