About the Author
Dedication
I dedicate this book to the only true one who was actually with me through it all. He loved me when I felt hated and rejected. In fact, his words to me were, Never will I leave you or forsake you.
He was my warmth in the freezing cold, he was my best friend and still is, and he was my strength when I was weak and scared. He was bravery when it all seemed dark. He was my light. He is my savior, my king, my Lord, my God. Psalms 139:8 says, If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths/hell, you are there.
Nobody but nobody gets the highest praise or the most thanks, and I thank him and will do my hardest, my very best to God Almighty and his son Jesus Christ. The best freedom and victory does not come from money but in knowing him. God, to you, I give all thanks for those you put in my path to help me and my family and you in setting me free! Physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally and financially. If you don’t know Jesus, get to know him as he wants to do for you what he had done for me. Never mind the so-called church people or religious people. Jesus is all you need. I promise you that. To God be the glory!

My second dedication is to my dear mother. Even as I write this dedication, it brings tears to my eyes. My mother raised not only her own kids but others as well. She tried so hard to keep the house in order. She loved me even when I was unlovable. She was sick with multiple sclerosis, but she loved. She cooked, she cleaned, and she did our nappy heads. She loved unconditionally. Whether I failed or succeeded, she loved. Mother once told me, The reason I live, Thomas, is for you.
My mother was not only willing to sacrifice for us but also she was a sacrifice for us! She was the epitome of motherhood. She gave to those bad friends of mine when they were hungry. She would discipline me when she felt it was needed, even one time chasing me over a fence with a stick. My mother’s name to me is the name of a saint. I think without her example of true sacrifice and true love, I may not have made it. I love you, Moms, and thank you so very much for teaching me to never be ashamed of who I was and for loving me even when I acted like the devil. You are my hero! I hope you are proud of me now.

I dedicate this to my good friend Don. You are my friend, my confidante, my ace, my man. There’s not enough I can say about you. It’s been more than twenty-eight years, and we are still best friends. You supported me through my marriage, my divorce, the drinking, the drugging. You were there when I was homeless. You would always tell me that you loved me, that things would get better, and you were there for me. You used to tell me something that I used to love hearing when I was young, No matter what you do in life, Thomas, no matter how bad it’s going to be, I’m always going to love you. I have no conditions on my love for you.
I’ve never heard a guy talk like that before without thinking he was gay. But it made me happy to know someone loved me like that even if I never told you. I am sorry for the time I picked you up and threw you on the floor. I was in such a dark place with the drugs, yet you said, I still love you. I’m going to keep praying for you.
I feel so proud to call you my friend. I admire the fact that you turned down teaching positions in prestigious schools to help those who need you the most. I am proud of Excel, your nonprofit school, because you help people like myself, people coming out of prison, people who have trouble with drugs and alcohol, people off the streets. You go above and beyond what any other teacher would do. Lastly, thank you for allowing me to come to Massachusetts with you because knowing what happened to those who stayed behind in New York, I truly believe my life would’ve turned out completely different.

I thank God for putting a Jewish man who went to college and who studied music on the different side of the tracks. Thank you, Neil Lipson. Neil has helped me in a lot of ways. When I’m down, he picks me up. He’s a part of my life. He’s not only just a business partner, but he’s a dear friend. I love Neil with all my heart. He’s become part of my family. He’s a character, but he’s definitely a great man and a great saxophonist. He helped me fall in love with music again. Music that is missing today and that music really takes me away when I’m stressed. Neil has been an integral part of my life. I’m sure God has another plan in store for
