After a trip to London, she set off for Guernsey and was immediately fascinated by the fact that the island was formerly under German occupation, to such an extent that she later decided to make it the setting of her story.
She spent several years writing the book. However, when her health began to decline she turned to her niece, Annie Barrows, a children’s author, for help. She died in 2008 before managing to see her first and only book published and go on to become a bestseller.
