Chapter One
RENEE KISLER.
Renee walked up on stage as she heard her family and friends cheering from the crowd. Renee was receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing which she earned with Honors. She had worked hard for this very day and it was already paying off. She smiled as she shook the dean’s hand and held the fake degree in her other hand. She smiled one more time and mouthed thank you before walking off the stage to take her seat. She sat in excitement as she enjoyed the rest of the graduation ceremony. When the commencement was over, she threw her cap in the air with the rest of her graduating class.
Renee!
Renee followed the call of the loud country accent.
She smiled when she saw her best friend waving her graduation cap in the air as if she was waving for help. She walked as fast as she could with her four inch heels on.
Katrina! I was looking for you earlier but I couldn’t find you. Congratulations girl, I’m so proud of you.
Renee squealed.
The two ebonies hugged each other tightly. They had been friends since freshmen year of college. They had stuck together through thick and thin; they were closer than Siamese twins. They had made a pact to have each other’s back no matter what. Most people assumed they were sisters because they were always together. If you saw Katrina, you saw Renee and vice versa.
Renee baby!
Renee broke their hug to look behind her. It was her mother walking towards her with her bag resting on her right forearm and holding a camera in her left hand.
Hey mom.
Renee greeted her mother with a hug.
Not far behind were her father and younger brother and sister.
Let me get a picture of you two beautiful young black graduates.
Katrina and Renee huddled close together holding each other at the waist. They lifted their caps off their head and posed with a big bright smile on their face.
Hey girl, I’m going to text you later, my brother is calling me.
Katrina said looking at her phone.
Ok, go be with your family. I love you girl.
The women hugged one more time before Katrina took off her heels and ran in the opposite direction. Renee laughed as she watched Katrina run; you could take the girl out of track, but you can’t take the track out of the girl she thought to herself.
I’m so proud of my baby.
Renee’s mother said as she hugged her neck.
I know ma. I’m just glad it is all over.
You are setting such a good example for your brother and sister. Now, they have big shoes to fill.
Renee laughed. Having two lawyers as parents, we all had big shoes to fill.
They both laughed together. Renee came from a wealthy family. Both her mother and father were lawyers who had met their junior year in high school. They both went to the same college and married right after they graduated. They had worked hard going on to start their own law firm. A few years later, they had Renee. Renee has never seen or known a day of poverty. They lived in one of the most exclusive black neighborhoods in the nation, she only ever attended private schools, and by the time she had turned 18, she had two luxury cars of her own sitting in her parents’ driveway. She couldn’t have asked for a better life. All of her boyfriends, which were three, also came from the same background as her. She wouldn’t be caught dead dating a thug. Renee’s parents made sure they shielded her from those types of people. Her parents had high hopes for Renee and they were determined to see them through. They paid for her college and made sure she never had to want for anything while attending school. They wanted her to focus on her studies. Yes, Renee attended a few parties here and there, but that was usually for special occasions. Now, those days were behind her, and come Monday morning she would be starting a new career as a Marketing specialist.
My sweet baby, you look so beautiful!
Renee’s father moaned with tears in his eyes.
Aww dad, it’s okay, there is no need to cry, you still have my brother and sister to go.
I know, but to see you walk across that stage just makes me and your mother so proud. Come here everyone.
Renee’s father motioned for everyone to come in for a
