    Prologue

Mom, is it okay if I spend the night at Amy's house after the game tonight? Rebecca asked, nervously.

What game ? Mom asked harshly. Her lip was curled in a snarl and her cold grey eyes only served to heighten her obvious distain for Rebecca.

It's the homecoming football game. I'm supposed to take pictures there for the yearbook. Rebecca responded. Rebecca had always loved photography and the fact that people liked her pictures made it even better.

Sure, I guess. I’ll never understand why you feel the need to do all these activities. I was fine without them, Mom went back to her magazine without another word.

Rebecca ran to the phone to call Amy and tell her it was okay for her to come over after the big game. It was the first time in over ten years that Springfield High actually had a decent chance at winning their homecoming game. Rebecca knew with absolute certainty that 2003 was their lucky year.

As she got her photography equipment together she hummed the school song and thought about all the great pictures she'd get tonight. Her room was messy, as only a teenage girls room can be. She was starting to panic because she couldn’t find the flash for her camera. She racked her brain, trying to remember where she might have left it. Finally, she realized she had left it in the apron she wore at work. She looked behind her bedroom door to discover the apron right where she had left it with the flash in the pocket. Embroidered at the top of the apron were the words Rebecca Walker – Assistant Photo Developer.

Just before she left she put her long, strawberry blonde hair into a high ponytail and briefly admired her green eyes and pale skin in the mirror. Her outfit was perfect, a short black dress made of jersey material with hot pink leggings. She was positive that Adam would notice her tonight.

The Springfield Warriors played their way to victory and Rebecca got it all on film; from the opening play to the Gatorade dunking at the end, it was all there in her camera.

Before she knew what was happening Adam ran up to her and kissed her right on the mouth. He yelled, This girl is our lucky charm! Then the team picked her up and carried her off to the locker room. Suddenly the mood wasn't so triumphant anymore. Instead it was just smelly and menacing. Adam walked up to Rebecca and said in an ugly tone, And we treat our good luck charms real good. He tossed her camera onto a bench. She was standing there, not sure what was going on or how to react. Before she could react Adam had roughly shoved her leggings down and knocked her to the floor. She was aware of the cold concrete floor, the smell of sweat left over from decades of sports player, and the cheers of the team as Adam forced himself into her. In a sudden burst of clarity she realized what was happening and started to scream. As her scream intensified she could hear Amy storming into the locker room shouting, What the hell is going on in here!?

The guys stopped cheering and quickly dispersed. Rebecca was curled up on the concrete floor, sobbing.

Rebecca! Oh my god! We need to get you to a hospital. Amy helped her up and drove her to the local emergency room. After Rebecca was checked in Amy, called Rebecca’s parents to tell her what happened.

Can I talk to her, please? Mrs. Walker said abruptly.

Of course, said Amy, handing the phone over.

Mom? said Rebecca, her voice shaking with tears.

"You're nothing but a dirty slut and I never want to see you in this house
