Knowing a Billionaire - Peggy Forbes

Kate, do you realize you’re three minutes late? Again? Bob, my boss, asked. His pudgy cheeks were red with anger. Even the belly that flopped over his jeans seemed to swell with rage at the sight of me.

I had to keep Sam past her end time! he said even though I knew that wasn't necessary. There were only three tables and all of them seemed to be in for a long haul.

Train ran slow, it won’t happen again. I said.

This is your second warning, He said threateningly, If it does happen again, I’m docking your pay.

Duly noted. I said. He gave me one last glare as he stormed into his office and locked himself in. I knew he would stay there the rest of the night. It was the only good thing about working for the man.

He was a total asshole, but you hardly ever saw him so it balanced out in the end. As one tables of college crammers left, one more table of collage guys studying for a final exam, came in just after they ordered the usual appetizer and tea.

At 3 am, Larry came in, grabbed his coffee and scooted back to his booth. I noticed then that I had started to hope that Jack would come through the door at 4 am. I knew it was more than silly to think that he would. It had been less than a few hours since we’d last seen each other but I knew that even rice stock brokers needed sleep. So, when 4 am came and went without incident, I tried not to feel too disappointed.

I finished a crossword puzzle, started to memorize a new monologue for an audition the next week, I was mostly just waiting for my shift to end. Then, at 5 am, the front door chimed. As angry I was with myself, I could not help smiling when I saw Jack walk through the door.

Checked my calendar, he said cheerfully, I’m free tonight. Where do you want to go?

I opened my mouth to tell him about this great Jazz bar that Amelia, Jacob and I favored just across from Amelia’s theater. Then I remembered, Shoot! I said, more to myself than to Jack.

What? Jack asked putting down the Folgers coffee I had just poured for him.

I just remembered... I said, it’s improvisation night.

Improv night? Jack said looking genuinely interested, that sounds fun.

It’s not... well... it is... but, see I’m performing and...

I’d love to see you perform! He said.

Would you love to watch a show with a bunch of strangers and then not be able to talk to me afterwards? I asked. Jacob and Amelia are in the show too. And, because of my boss’s scheduling, I’ve got to head to work right after the show is done.

So now I’m not allowed to have fun if you’re not right next to me? Jack said with a teasing smirk, "I thought you said
