    Forged Marine - Claire James

What am I doing here? This was the question I kept asking myself over and over again as I sat on a church transport bus rolling through poorly paved roads, dirt patches and occasional green jungles that make up southern Mexico.

I just wanted to let you know. Your friend Thomas is in the emergency room.

Kathy’s voice rings out to me over the cell phone just before I slip into my PJs.

What? I ask her. I’m not sure if I’ve heard her correctly. I hope I didn’t.

And Sean’s at the police station, she said. My head reeled again.

How did all this happen? It had only been two hours since I got home. It was hard to imagine two things that huge occurring in that amount of time.

There was a lot more drinking after you left.

Clearly, I say. Though, I still don’t know what happened. Even though, as I gently rub the bruises on my thighs the thought of Sean in handcuffs or behind bars, I’ll admit, does give me a grim kind of satisfaction.

    What happened? I ask.

Well, it’s a long story, Kathy says with a sigh.

I’m not going anywhere, I say. I know I should, as a friend, rush right over to make sure Thomas is all right. Especially after I left him with a bunch of guys he hardly knew. But, after what happened. After being shoved against a wall and slapped and forced...I don’t want to go anywhere. I just want to curl up in a ball until all the pain goes away.

I know you probably don’t want to see Sean, Kathy says, he told me about what happened.

What did he tell you? I ask, almost bitterly. I cannot believe that he would do that to me and then go out to his buddies and brag about it! It makes me shiver all over again and just reinforces the fact that that sweet boy I knew in high school is gone. Sean is now a stranger who I want nothing to do with.

He didn’t say anything at first, Kathy said, James found him in the bathroom crying though he tried to hide it. Then he brought him out and he just kept saying that he’d done something horrible and that you would never forgive him.

Yeah, well, he’s right about that, I say. This time I don’t even try to hide the bitter tinge that fills my voice. He could cry an entire ocean of tears and I still wouldn’t feel sorry for him.

Look, I’m not going to ask you to go into details, Kathy said, I will say, whatever happened, you should know he’s sorry and he hates himself. That’s why he went to the police.

I roll my eyes and heave a sigh. How can I expect one of Sean’s Marine buddies to understand?

What happened to Thomas? I ask.

Well...you might want to come down here for that. I’m not sure I can really explain it over the phone, she says.

I heave yet another sigh. I don’t want to see anyone after what I’ve gone through. But, I do realize that, I owe Thomas a visit at least. After all, it was my idea to go to dinner with Sean and his friends. And I did leave Thomas there after I’d invited him. Even if I had a very good reason.

Ok, I say reluctantly into the phone, which emergency room did you take him to?

It’s St. Luke’s Baptist, Kathy said, The one just two blocks from the restaurant.

    "I’ll be there
