    Chapter 1: Criminal Kyle

    It was dark. Almost too dark. Kyle ran through the forest, darting under tree limbs and over protruding roots as if his life depended on it. Because it did. He should have left the stolen goods behind. They were only slowing him down, but it was too late to second-guess himself now. He was all in.

    He looked over his shoulders in search of the rider who belonged to the menacing galloping sound that got louder and louder with every passing second. He shouldn't look behind. Ever. What's done was done. You can only control what happens next. I had told him that all the time but he never listened to me. Instead, the next time he looked behind him, he tripped on something, sending the bag of stolen silver and china flying into the air. Criminal Kyle looked hurt, but he wasn't. I knew he'd hop right up ready to fight. And he did.

    He unsheathed his sword just as the horse that had been chasing him stopped and its rider dismounted.

    You have nowhere to run, the rider said. Turn yourself in and I'm sure the authorities will be lenient.

    I would rather die, Kyle said in reply.

    That can be arranged. He, too, unsheathed his sword just in time to block the first strike from Kyle.

    Now, Kyle had tried time and again to teach me all the proper words for all the techniques and moves he uses when he fights but nothing ever stuck. All I knew was that Kyle sliced his sword through the air over and over as if trying to take the guy’s head off. Each time, the man held Kyle off with a clank of the sword. After a few seconds of retreating backwards, Kyle had him pinned over a tree stump. I thought the battle would end there but it didn't. The man kneed Kyle in the stomach. When Kyle doubled over in pain, the rider tried to hit him in the head with the handle of his sword. Kyle, however, did this awesome looking one handed backflip (which I had taught him by the way), then spun around and swept the guy's feet from under him. Once he
