Chapter 1: Dead Dudes and Doorbells

When a dead guy rings your doorbell first thing in the morning, you pretty much know your day isn’t going to be that great. Well, he probably wasn’t dead when he initially rang the doorbell which meant the first thing I needed to do was figure out why my doorbell was killing people.

I actually heard the dead guy before he rang the doorbell ... and before he was ... well ... dead. I just assumed it was Tai a little too excited for school. I thought she needed a 5:00 a.m. fashion counseling session before her first high school Pre-Calculus test. Yeah, she liked to dress up for tests. Weird, right? But it wasn’t Tai on my doorstep. Like I said before, it was the dead guy.

Simultaneously, they turned their heads back toward the dead body, unable to give me an answer. Ha! Stumped them. Take that, stupid super geniuses. Geniusi? What the heck was the plural of genius?

Anyway, looking at my family, I could tell that we were all equal parts scared, nervous, and confused. And it wasn’t like we had never seen a dead body or something. My mom, dad and I had actually killed people with our own hands. Josh had never directly killed anyone, but he did hold his dead girlfriend, Katya, in his arms and cry for hours. In any case, we were all pretty familiar with death unfortunately.

But this was different. Death had never literally landed on our doorstep. And to top it off, we had no idea who this dude was.
