Marriage Prayers in the Bible Prayers and Scriptures for Every Married Couple - Simon Kennard
Introduction
Till death do us part
aren’t empty words or a meaningless tradition—at least they aren’t supposed to be. God’s intention for marriage is that it be a life-long commitment. Yes, it is a commitment—one that requires work, sacrifice, selflessness, and a sense of humor. But the reward for that commitment is immeasurable when it comes to the love and fulfilment you will experience as a result of making it.
God created the concept and institutions of marriage and family as well as giving us guidelines for getting the maximum benefit from them. He also made sure we had plenty of examples of how to do marriage and how not to do marriage in the Bible.
This book focuses on combing the examples of marriage we have in the Bible with the scriptures that provide instruction on how to do marriage right and a reminder that the best marriages are those that keep an open line of communication between you and God, aka, prayer, and that put God in the center of the relationship.
We will look at the various elements of a marriage, ask ‘food for thought’ questions, offer marriage enhancement activities, and make suggestions on how to pray for your marriage.
Not every chapter will be pertinent for every marriage, but I encourage you to read through it anyway because you never know when you might need it or have the opportunity to share what you read with someone. In doing so, you might just help them improve their marriage.
Marriage is meant to be a physical, mental, and emotional partnership. So why not give your marriage over to God to make it the best it can be!
That’s What I’m Talkin’ About
Besides the book of Revelation, no other book in the Bible is as shied away from as the Song of Songs (some refer to it as the Song of Solomon, since he is believed to be the writer). But why? Is it because the Song of Songs includes the words ‘breasts’ and ‘lover’? Is it because Solomon and his woman talk about their passion and desire for one another? I mean, this is the Bible we’re talking about. Those things aren’t supposed to be in there…are they?
As a matter of fact, they are. God made us with all the parts, hormones, and emotions that make up our sexual self. He wants us to have all those feelings and desires…for our husbands or wives. There, I said it. God wants us to have sex and enjoy it with our forever, ‘til death do us part’ spouse. Sex in the context of marriage is not dirty or bad like past generations have tried to make it.
Not too terribly long ago, sex was seen by many women as the thing you had to do to make babies and keep your husband happy. Good girls didn’t dare admit they enjoyed it if they even allowed themselves to. After that came the age of free love where sex was nothing more than a recreational sport to ‘played’ as often and with as many people as you could. Neither one is what God has in mind for you. God wants the two of you to find each other attractive, desirable, and sexy. Or in the words of the Song of Songs, he wants your bed to be verdant
, which means fertile (1:16) and he wants you to be completely committed to one another. My lover is mine and I am his…
(2:16).
The sexual relationship of a husband and wife is a very important part of a marriage—especially in the early years when our sex drives are stronger than they are when we’re older and we are having children. So go ahead—embrace it. Enjoy it. Cultivate it.
Talk about it
Spend some time together (preferably cuddling on the couch) sharing your answers to the following questions.
What do you find most appealing about me?
Are you satisfied with our sex life? Explain.
Read through Song of Songs together. Try not to laugh too hard when Solomon tells his love that her hair is like a goat (and that’s a compliment). After reading it, spend a few minutes telling each other how much you love one another and the qualities you admire in each other.
God’s Word for your marriage
Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. ~Hebrews 13:4
Now for the matters you wrote about: It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.
But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. ~1st Corinthians 7:1-5
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. ~Genesis 2:24
So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate." ~Matthew 19:6
A prayer for your marriage
Dear Father in heaven,
I ask that you bless my marriage and that you help us keep the passion and sexual desire for each other strong. I pray that we have eyes and hearts only for each other and that we never take each other for granted.
Lord, please give us the heart and frame of mind to take care of our bodies so that we feel attractive and that my spouse feels like I want to please him/her. Let us take pleasure in each other and not be afraid, embarrassed, or ashamed to tell each other what pleases us.
Thank you for sending this man/woman into my life to be my life-long partner. Thank you for
