Who, Me?
The inspiration for the title of this book comes from Christian author, Bill Hull. Mr. Hull’s study of what being a true disciple of Jesus ‘looks like’ focuses on what he (and others) call stages of discipleship.
Before we get too entrenched in the how to’s of discipleship, though, let’s make sure you understand what a disciple is. After all, it’s usually best to know what you’ll become before you commit to the change—right? This is especially true when it comes to a word like disciple. That’s because in the minds of many people (Christian people) the word disciple is a ‘church word’. It ranks right up there with righteousness, intercessor, repentance, and the big one…sanctification. These are the words many Christians believe should only be taken out and used on special occasions. Not so—especially when it comes to the word disciple.
The definition of a disciple is: a dedicated and committed follower or student of a teacher, leader, or philosopher. Did you read that? Read it again. Now that you know what a disciple is, answer this: Who can be a disciple? Or to be more precise, who should be a disciple?
Ding! Ding! Ding! I know! I know! The answer to both questions is ANYONE WHO CLAIMS TO GIVE THEIR LIFE TO CHRIST BY ACCEPTING HIS GIFT OF SALVATION.
That’s right—when someone accepts Jesus as Savior, the choice is meant to be a complete and total submission to the teacher of teachers. When someone accepts Jesus as Savior, they are to follow him faithfully 24/7. When someone accepts Jesus as Savior, they become a disciple.
Being Jesus’ disciple is more than something you do, though. It’s who you are. But don’t worry, Jesus knows becoming a disciple isn’t automatic. He knows it’s a process and that the process doesn’t happen for everyone in the same way and in the same time frame. Think of it like this: when we’re born we are 100% human. Our bodies are fully developed, yet they’re not. As babies we can’t feed ourselves, walk, talk, or manage even the simplest of tasks such as bending, brushing our teeth, or pulling on a pair of socks. These things come later. The same thing is true when it comes to being a disciple of Jesus. When we acknowledge him as LORD through confession and come up out of the water (baptism) we are 100% forgiven and new. We have the Holy Spirit residing in us. But that’s just the beginning. It’s an essential beginning, but a beginning, nevertheless.
Being Jesus’ disciple is a way of life—not just something you check off your to-do list. It’s easy to say you want to follow Jesus, to go to church (most of the time, anyway), throw a few dollars in the offering plate, serve on a committee or two, and to be an
