Born in 1850, Guy de Maupassant was a French writer who produced a total of six novels and over three hundred short stories. He spent his childhood in Normandy, where he began studies in law. In 1870, he enlisted as a volunteer in the Franco-Prussian War, before moving to Paris where he worked as a civil servant. Gustave Flaubert, a friend of his mother, took him under his wing and introduced him to the literary circles. He mixed with the realist and naturalist writers of his time, including Émile Zola. From 1880 to 1890, he wrote novels (Une Vie, Bel Ami) and many realist short stories (Boule de suif, La Maison Tellier, etc.) and
