    Chapter One: Introduction

That Was Then, This Is Now by S. E. Hinton was first published in 1971. It is a coming-of-age young adult novel. The novel revolves around the relationship between Mark and Bryon. They are just like brothers to each other, however, as the time progresses, their relationship begins to change quite rapidly.

The book has also been adapted into a very successful movie. The title of the novel is highly noticeable. It has been derived from one of the most significant lines of the novel.

The novel is set in the same world as the earlier novel The Outsiders. The novel The Outsiders had been published in 1967. The present novel is also set in the same universe. However, the year is 1975.

According to the author, she had written That Was Then, This Is Now based on a friendship. The author provides sufficient information in an afterword about how the novel was created.

She says that he had written the major part of the present novel while she was studying at the University of Oklahoma. In those days, she was very seriously dating her boyfriend. She was deeply in love with him. At the same time, she was taking her studies very seriously.

She mentions that in the process of writing the present novel, she suffered a very deep writer’s block. Since she had proved to be very successful writer after the publication of her earlier book The Outsiders, she says that some of the writer’s block was caused because of that.

She says that she felt as if people were following her everywhere and trying to find out what she was doing. They seemed to be very much anxious to know what she was going to do next. She says that the thought almost paralyzed her and writing became almost impossible.

Eventually, her boyfriend who was going to be her future husband inspired her and suggested to her to write only two pages a day. He told her that he would not take her out until she had written those two pages.

It is said that the author received her contracts for That Was Then, This Is Now on the day of her wedding. It was obviously a very happy development in her writing career and her married life.

When the book was published for the first time, most of the reviews were highly positive and both the critics and readers admired the author’s skills.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

The story begins in a bad part of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
