Burn Me Again - Becky Harris

    Introduction

I guess we’d been best friends pretty much forever. I remember the day we met like it was yesterday. It was the first day of kindergarten and I was latched onto the pant leg of my mother’s designer suit, begging her not to leave me. I didn’t realize then that Body would be one of the best friends I ever had. I know I didn’t realize then that I would love him more than anyone else. Now, after years and years together, he’s made a promise to me. I just hope he can keep it.

    Chapter One

Mommy please! I begged, tugging at her pants. I don’t wanna stay.

Emily, you have to. Get off. She pried me off her leg and dropped me into the room. By the time I had turned around the door was closed and she was gone.

Emily? A soft voice asked and I turned around to see a woman with bright flowers on her dress and a blue apron.

Yes… I mumbled, pulling at my bottom lip.

I’m Mrs. Ellen, your teacher, don’t you want to come play? She kneeled down so she was my height.

No. I shook my head. I was scared of the other kids. I didn’t like to play with them because I was shy. To further this fear a scream erupted from the room and my eyes widened.

Mrs. Ellen looked over her shoulder and straightened. Brody, what are you doing?

She strode across the room and grabbed the little boy’s arm, leading him back towards me and setting him on a small chair. Do you think it’s nice to put glue in other people’s hair?

Yes. He grinned at her, showing her his best four year old smile.

It’s not. I’ll let you off because it’s the first day, but I’m watching you. She pointed to him and stood up, seemingly forgetting about me.

I looked over and watched the little boy who sat in the chair. He was already taller than me and had shaggy brown hair that was lighter than mine and pretty blue eyes that I was already jealous of because I hated my brown eyes.

Hey. He jumped off the chair noticing me for the first time.

    Hi. I mumbled.

Why are you doing that? He asked, frowning at me.

    Doing what?

    Pulling at your lip.

I dropped my hand back down and twisted it together with my other one. I dunno.

    You’re pretty.

My eyes widened and I looked back up at him in shock. No I’m not. Mommy says I’m plain.

Plain is pretty. He shrugged, undeterred, My name’s Brody, want to be my best friend?

Your what? I gaped at him. No one had ever paid as much attention to me as he was
