    The wind howled and rattled the windows of the cabin. I glanced up from the illuminated screen of my laptop and looked at the snow coming down outside. My dog Shemp looked up from his cushion on the floor and whined softly. He was just as worried as I was.

    It's okay, boy, I told him reassuringly. His tail wagged once and then his head laid back down on his bed, but his eyes still watched the window.

    I had been told that the blizzard was on its way and that it would be bad, but I didn't realize that it would be this bad. I had been coming up to this mountain cabin every winter around this time for the past ten years. I liked the peace and quiet, it gave me a chance to be alone with my thoughts, to get the creative juices flowing. My editor back in New York City never understood my need to be cut off from all human contact when I was working
