Chapter One: Introduction
Go Tell It On the Mountain
by James Baldwin was first published in 1953. It is a semi-autobiographical novel. The story of the novel revolves around the central character, John Grimes. He happens to be an intelligent teenager in the 1930’s Harlem. It also describes John’s relationship with his family and his church.
The novel also includes some back stories of John’s mother, his biological father, and his step-father, Gabriel Grimes who happens to be a very violent and religious fanatic.
The narrative also describes how the role of the Christian Church is important in the lives of African-Americans. It happens to be a kind of negative source of repression and moral hypocrisy, but at the same time it is also a positive source of inspiration.
The book was included in the list of the one hundred best English novels of the twentieth century by the Modern Library in the year 1998. It was also included in the Best English Language Novels list of Time Magazine.
It happens to be the author’s first major work that brought him a lot of name and fame and skyrocketed him into literary stardom soon after its publication.
As the book opens, the central character, John Grimes, happens to be fourteen years old. Through his intellect he decides to escape from the clutches of his unloving father.
It later transpires in the story that he is John’s stepfather, Gabriel. He happens to be a Pentecostal Preacher.
Like the author of the novel, John Grimes also has some homosexual urges. He has to face family problems and abuse at home. When he undergoes a highly radical transformation, he becomes a Christian.
