The author had a very difficult childhood. It was full of prejudice and ostracism and there were several reasons for that. There were several things which were against her in that prejudiced society. First of all, she was black. She was the child of a single mother, and lastly she was very outspoken at her young age.
At the age of seven she started going to school owing to a generous benefactor. However, she left the school only after two years because they had to move.

Chapter One: Introduction
Carolina Maria de Jesus, the author of Child of the Dark
was born to a single mother in the year 194. She was born in a rural town on the outskirts of Sao Paulo.
Her father had left her and her mother when she was still a child. Her mother was a destitute after Carolina’s father left her. She began to work as a housekeeper in a brothel. She had to survive and take care of her daughter.
While working in the brothel, her mother had to tolerate the scorn from the people around her.
