    I Justice - B.A. Savage

    Chapter 1

Saint Joseph Hospital isn’t where I meet a client, but when Sloan Carter’s associate called I knew it was significant. As I walked down the intensive care unit, I’m approached by a beautiful woman.

    Mr. Stone?

    Yes.

I’m Rebecca Wilson, Mr. Carter; associate his room down this way, she points.

    What happened, Rebecca? I asked.

He was attacked by a dog.

    Is it serious?

Well, he’s in pretty bad shape. Doctor Roberts didn’t want him to have any visitors, but Mr. Carter insisted I called you.

We walked down the hallways to the room marked 104. When I stepped in, I saw my friend lying in bed a nurse’s disinfectant his wound, and he didn’t look good.

    Hello, Randall, he whispers.

I’m sorry but no visitors. The nurse said.

That’s okay, come on in Randall, Sloan said.

But Mr. Carter, you know what the doctor said, she said.

That’s okay; this won’t take long, he assured her.

I’m sorry Mr. Carter; I have to get the doctor. She turns and walks out of the room.

Sit down son, Sloan said, motioning to the chair.

    How are you feeling, buddy?

He shook his head saying, Randall I had Rebecca call because I have a job for you. I can’t pay much, but if you could check this out for a discount rate, I would appreciate it.

In your condition you make it hard to refuse, I smiled.

I don’t think this was an accident. I think that dog was ordered to kill me, Randall.

    Why?

    Have you read my column?

    Yes, almost every day.

You know I have been trying to bring Tom Saul down for years.

    Yeah.

You know Saul’s a dick head, who has his hands in every dirty deal on this side of the Ohio River. I have been exposing his business for months. So far I had two warnings, late night phone calls saying, stay out of Tom Saul’s business or else, he said.

From the looks of you, you didn’t listen.

Randall, find that man with the dog. You are the only person I can trust. There are a lot of people connected to Saul. Find this dog man, and if there’s a connection to Saul, I will have enough to shut him down for good.

What type of dog attacked you, Sloan?

I was too busy protecting myself to notice. He was big with a head as big as mine and as strong as a bull.

    Anything else? I said.

Yes, once I started getting the warnings I would make sure everything is locked up before I get to bed. A few days ago someone broke into my home. The back door was jimmy open. The first time I checked, I didn’t find anything missing, but yesterday I noticed one of my house shoe missing.

    Just one? I asked.

Yes, just one. I think it was used to give the dog my scent, Randall."

The door opened, and a man wearing a lab coat walks in and he didn’t look happy.

Now look, Mr. Carter, I told you no visitors, He said.

Doctor, he’s from the Humane Society. He is trying to locate the dog before he attacks someone else, Sloan said.

We need to catch this vicious dog before he attacks, some kid, I said walking to the door.

Send me a bill, Randall, Sloan yelled.

This one is on the house pal, I smiled.

    Chapter 2

On my way out to the front entrance, I couldn’t find Rebecca anywhere. I left the hospital walked across the parking lot, and a man approached me. He displayed an evil smile pulling a pistol out of his pocket.

Mr. Stone; Tom Saul would like to speak with you, he said.

He guided me to the end of the parking lot to where two men were standing beside a dark colored limo.

Get in Stone, the guy ordered.

I climbed in to see a well-groomed, thin man with a diamond ring on his finger.

It’s about time we met, Stone. I just heard about Mr. Carter’s unfortunate accident, he said from the shadows of the car.

You sure it was an accident? I countered.

    Did you talk to him?

    Yes.

I’m told a dog attacked him, and he’s in bad shape, he said.

    "Yes, he is in pretty
