    A Message from the President/CEO . . .

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The staff at R.H. Boyd Publishing Corporation enthusiastically welcomes you to another inspirational quarter of biblical study. For 120 years, it has been our privilege and joy to offer the highest quality of literature for the African-American home and church. We hope that the significant amount of thought, planning, and preparation that went into this material will translate into an edifying and inspiring experience for you.

Over the next three months, we will study a variety of texts from both the Old and New Testaments. The first unit explores themes of love and death through an examination of weddings and funerals in the Scriptures. The second unit maintains this focus on the importance of ritual. It looks at several festivals described in the Law and highlights their purpose in God’s redemptive work. The final unit, for the month of March, examines the Gospel of Mark and several moments when the faith of Jesus’ followers was tested. The overall lesson is the importance of faith in the midst of doubt.

We pray you will complete this quarter with a stronger understanding of Scripture and a stronger commitment to God. As we have done for the last 120 years, we pledge to continue to produce doctrinally sound resources for the body of Christ and the African-American community. We are confident this study is just one of the many ways R.H. Boyd Publishing Corporation fulfills that mission and, in a small way, helps to bring readers into a closer relationship with God.

    In His Service,

    Dr. T. B. Boyd III

    President/CEO

The study this quarter explores the theme of tradition in three ways based on passages from both Old and New Testaments. Included are the traditions by which we honor God, observe special occasions in life, and celebrate holy times together.

    UNIT I — JANUARY

Unit I, titled Four Weddings and a Funeral, has five sessions that look at four stories about traditions of love and marriage and their various expressions in the relationships between males and females plus one story that deals with the issue of death and the traditions surrounding its finality.

    UNIT II — FEBRUARY

Unit II, Holy Days, deals with the traditions related to four special commemorations celebrated by the Jews: Passover, the Feast of Weeks, the Day of Atonement, and the Festival of Booths.

    UNIT III — MARCH

Unit III, Tests of Faith, is a four-session unit leading up to and including Palm Sunday and Easter. Based on passages in Mark, four different incidents that tested the faith of Jesus’ followers—healing, wealth accumulation, denial of friendship, and resurrection—are presented for learning and discussion.
