    Introduction

This book is based on a true story. Perhaps by reading it you will know what that Higher Love is and perhaps it will help you find the 'Higher Love.'

    Higher Love

    Frank Brody

I was 22 years old, fit as a fiddle and in love. She was a vision. Long, wet, brown hair cascaded down her shoulders and her smile lit up the room when her eyes lighted on me. She had just finished showering and dressing when we arrived at her place in Simons Town. Beverley, my cousin, from my mom's side just smiled. She was happy to introduce the two of us. Beverley was a load of fun and she had planned a great day and evening out. I loaded the two girls into my dad's old yellow Volkswagen Beetle and we hit the road. I couldn't take my eyes off Avril Doherty. I wanted her to be my girl, she wanted me to be her guy but none of us was the wiser. I kept on sneaking peeks at her and in peak traffic; this was not a great idea. We were going at a crawl when we crossed the Maitland Bridge. We chatted away and laughed and I didn't focus on the car in front of me. Sure enough, I bumped into it. It was more of a nudge than a bump but tell that to the occupants.

The girls burst out laughing but I wasn't smiling. There were five guys in the vehicle I had just bumped nudged into. I had to think quickly. I showed them a parking lot on the right hand side of the road as we were descending the Bridge and I indicated that I would turn in there. Through a flurry of gestures, mostly obscene, they agreed. They drove in first and the traffic closed off the entrance. I did what any brave thinking man would do...I drove off as fast as I could! The girls were laughing continuously and I managed to join in. I glanced at Avril and I saw the admiration in her eyes. My heart was beating a little faster than usual. This was Cape Town it was summer and it was time for love...

It was an awesome night. We danced the night away. Michael Jackson's 'Billy Jean', gave me the opening I needed. She said yes and we kissed...

I was 11 years old and devastated. My mom had just passed. She never said goodbye. I ran and ran...

School was a burden. The Catholics knew to leave me alone and when they didn't I just cried. They took compassion but I faked it. I didn't understand why God would take my mom. I was so young, why would He do such a thing? I started sneaking out at night and stayed away from school. My dad couldn't stay in the house for much longer after mom. The memories became too much for him. I stayed behind with my eldest sister, Margaret. She would look after me until I finished school. I ended up staying there longer than what I had hoped. Dad was always there for me. I always knew I was his favorite. He eventually remarried. Mandy was her name. We got on is all I can say. I had other siblings. Shaun, Gary and Marvin were brothers I never knew at my young age. They were all much older than I. I also had another sister, June, but she was the eldest of the girls and I hardly even knew her.

I was a rebel and as I said I sneaked out
