A lecturer accompanies each tour. Julia's tours go well and Claudia is her main contact at headquarters. Julia realizes Claudia doesn't like her and Julia finds it's because she is after Roark Ellis, who is the lecturer on Julia's next tour. Roark is divorced and not looking for a replacement. Julia's uncomplicated honesty impresses Roark and she likes him. Claudia is troubled.
Julia and Roark meet up on another tour and their friendship grows. One day Roark kisses her. He's mad at himself, and Julia is mad about his reaction. She swims through a haze of new feelings. She and Roark part and go their separate ways until, one day, Julia meets Roark with two women who he introduces as his 'sister and Fiona'. Julia meets Claudia, who tells Julia that Roark's ex-wife has returned and is hoping for reconciliation. Was the woman with Roark his ex-wife?
Julia has enough saved for her post-graduate course and intends to leave. On her final tour, she has to return to London when her grandmother is taken to hospital. Roark is waiting at the airport to take her to the hospital and, after Julia sees her grandmother, he takes her to his flat. The next morning, on the way to the hospital, they quarrel. Julia is on her final tour. She realizes she loves Roark but it seems that happiness will evade her again. Or will it ....?

Chapter One
Why do you want this job?
His eyes were dark, unblinking and demanding. His features were too thin and there was an air of remoteness about him. From the way he studied her, she could tell he was used to being in command, and interviewing people. Julia admitted he was the kind of man with an aura that attracted her, even though she tried not to pay him any special attention.
She didn't hesitate. Because it sounds like an interesting job Mr Ellis, and because I need to earn more regular money than I'm doing at present.
Sitting to his right a blonde beauty, with pale blue eyes and an aloof expression, lifted her pale eyebrows and gave him a knowing smile before she resumed her silent study of Julia.
Julia noted the exchange. She felt increasingly like a specimen under a magnifying glass.
Roark Ellis looked down and shuffled through the papers in front of him. He pulled out a sheet and began to summarize. You're single, you've a BA in history and languages, you're working in hotels to finance your studies, and you live on the outskirts of London. Is that correct?
He scrutinized her quiet oval face and waited for her confirmation.
It came. Yes, that's correct.
What are you doing at present?
I'm still working in hotels, part time, but I want to find something permanent, and something that pays better wages.
You have a good degree, why haven't you found something a cut above waiting at tables in hotels.
Lifting her chin and trying not to feel irritated, she replied. Someone has to wait at tables, why not me? A degree is a springboard, but it doesn't guarantee anyone a permanent job these days.
He held her glance. Surely you could manage an office job, if you want to earn more?
She shrugged unconsciously. I've tried it, but office work is not my cup of tea. I enjoy being with people.
He didn't comment. His gaze was so direct it disconcerted her and she was glad when the second man sitting opposite gave her an encouraging smile. The two men resembled each other. They'd introduced themselves as Roark and Keith Ellis, so in all probability they were related. The second man commented. There's nothing wrong with not liking office work Roark. Some of us love it, others don't.
Julia found that the dour looking man could smile, and when he did so it was an instantaneous improvement. He wasn't handsome in the classical sense, but there was definitely something captivating about his strong features.
He smiled softly and replied. I didn't say there was, did I? I just wanted to point out that Miss Radford has a good degree and isn't utilizing it properly, that's all.
Yes, I expect you do find that hard to understand, don't you?
The friendlier man with sympathetic brown eyes, directed his words towards Julia again. We need employees who enjoy being with people, so you obviously fit that criterion. Staff members need to be completely client orientated and work without complaint, for as long as it's necessary, so that our guests feel they're getting value for money. Do you think you could handle that?
Julia nodded and concentrated on the friendlier man. She tried to ignore the other two, as much as she could. I'm accustomed to treating customers with respect and courtesy no matter how difficult they are.
He gave her a brief nod. What exactly have you been doing?
She gave him a quiet smile. I've waited at tables, helped in reception, decorated rooms for weddings and conferences, and even covered for a barman on a couple of occasions.
The aloof man's dark eyebrows lifted. He joined in and he asked. Which hotels?
Julia fumbled in her shoulder bag, unfolded a sheet of paper, and pushed it across the shiny surface towards him. I've listed them. Nearly all of them gave me a good reference. One or two didn't, but I think that was because the manager didn't know how to formulate a proper reference and he just made an excuse and a promise.
She coloured, and wished her brain worked slower than her mouth. Her remark wasn't clever; these people were management level people and might think she was being disrespectful and nit picking. If you'd like to see the ones I have, I'll be glad to forward them, of course. I thought it might seem overconfident to bring them along.
She had large hazel eyes, dark brows and long lashes. Roark was glad they weren't blue; he would have been less inclined to study her face if they were. He nodded absentmindedly. Send copies to the personnel department
. With a hint of humour he continued. I can tell that you're spontaneous character but that's not an impediment in our case, because this job sometimes requires our representatives have to find unconventional solutions if problems crop up. They also need to be patient and well mannered at all times even if chaos breaks out. You think you can cope with that?
Julia coloured slightly, and nodded.
The blonde beauty joined in swiftly. Negative reactions are taboo. You must put customers first at all times, whether they're right or wrong, and whether you like them or not.
Julia looked straight at her. I assure you I can be the soul of discretion. Hotel guests and visitors can be very demanding. I've learned how to be polite and respectful, no matter what happens. He who pays the piper calls the tune!
The woman looked sceptical and made a quick note on her pad.
The interview went on a little longer; about her hobbies and how she'd react to imaginary situations.
Julia wasn't sorry when the more serious man said. I think that's enough for the moment, agreed?
The other two nodded.
Thank you for coming Miss Radford. We'll be in touch when we've come to a decision, one way or the other.
Julia got up and straightened her skirt. Her dark hair was cut neatly to follow the oval shape of her features; longer in the front than the back, and it swung gently over her cheeks as she pushed her chair back to its original position. She glanced at the three faces opposite, and her eyes skipped across Roark Ellis' face quickly. Thank you. Good morning!
They waited until her slim figure left, closing the door behind her quietly.
Roark Ellis was still staring at the door. Hmm! Not bad. She shows enterprise, she's intelligent, she's honest, she's attractive, and she'd had experience of handling all kinds of people.
Claudia Wellington glanced at her notes. She bit the top of her pen. I have the impression that she's very impulsive, and I wonder why she's not found a better job before now. She finished her degree one and a half years ago.
Roark tidied his papers. Good point that. We should've asked her why. How many more on the list?
Keith Ellis looked at a paper in front of him. Another four. I must say I was taken with Miss Radford. She's young, uncomplicated, and friendly. She's anxious to find a permanent job and that makes her anxious to do her best; that is positive for us and her good university qualifications. Right, go ahead Claudia fetch the next one, please!
On the train home, Julia reflected on the interview, and hoped she hadn't made a complete hash of it. She'd seen the advert when she went for a dental check up and flipped through a travel magazine while she was waiting. With the permission of the dental receptionist, she'd torn the page out, and applied. She was fed up with badly paid hotel jobs that were getting her nowhere. She needed a postgraduate teacher's certificate for the kind of work she wanted, and postgraduate studies cost money; money she didn't have. Her Gran had immediately offered her somewhere to live while she did so, but she still needed the fees.
The sweet smell of
