    Chapter One

Julie was giddy. She kept trying to smother the silly grin that crawled across her face every few seconds. Vacation! She wanted to stand on a chair and let everyone know that she was on her way to a weekend of relaxation. Pulling out her phone, she tilted her head, her hair forming a private curtain around her. Julie beamed as she pretended to check something on her cell. Cha-cha-cha-vacation. Cha-cha-cha-vacation. Maybe she ought to start a conga line in the waiting room. Her cheeks ached from smiling as she imagined the people milling about, dancing with maracas. Taking a deep breath to quell her excitement, she dropped her phone back into her purse and looked around the large hall.

People sat or stood around, each doing their own thing. A group of youngsters sat on the floor in a circle, drinking and cracking loud jokes. A mother attempted to distract her young daughter with a picture book. Julie stifled a smile. The child kept pointing at the older kids, ignoring her mother. Nearby, a couple snuggled close together, whispering amongst themselves. At their side, a man who appeared to be in his sixties read the news, frowning every few seconds as his eyes scanned the black-and-white pages. Crossing her legs, Julie ran a hand through her hair and gazed at the screen with the train departure times.

Just a few more minutes, she mumbled.

She continued to watch the travelers hurrying through the station. Some, like her, appeared relaxed, smiles lighting up their features. Others raced about, dressed in business suits and carrying portfolios, a cell phone attached to their ear. Any other day, that could have been her. Not today. Glancing at the clock once more, she decided she still had time to make a quick bathroom break before departure. Maybe she could even grab a snack. Getting on her feet, she pulled down her short-shorts and adjusted her t-shirt. Scooping up her bag, she checked the hall for a bathroom sign and made her way across the crowds.

Julie took a sip of the cool Coke and closed her eyes as she swallowed. She loved Coke. She knew it wasn’t exactly healthy, but a vacation was a vacation. Taking a bite out of her chocolate-filled donut, she smiled. Yes, a vacation was definitely a vacation.
