    Prologue

The warriors stood in perfect formation, their golden helmets glistening under the early morning sunlight and the tips of their spears glittering dangerously in their grips, warning the enemy to back off. Signaling with his right hand, Amandus rode forward while the Arcánús, Cupid’s most trusted guard, moved to the front of the line. They would be the first to attack. Composed of 12 men, the Arcánús where Cupid’s children, the only ones entrusted to aid the God in his mission to bestow love upon others. Kind and compassionate, the Arcánús could also prove lethal in times of war.

Quickly riding toward the center of the field, Amandus wondered what he would encounter in the witch’s lead official. He was not frightened. The Arcánús were never frightened. However, something akin to worry gnawed at his gut. The witch, Ariadne, was a dangerous foe. Hundreds of years old, her power was similar to that of a lesser god and she could create great damage if she wished. Reaching his allotted position, he removed his helmet and waited for the enemy’s representative. Perhaps they could still put an end to this madness, though he doubted it. He glanced at the rolling green fields around him, and the thought of the battle that would soon ensue, saddening him. The animals that had not fled already would certainly run as soon as they smelled the blood. Sighing, he lifted his gaze. His eyes widened as he caught sight of the person trotting toward him.

Bereft of helmet or armor the witch rode with confidence, her golden tresses billowing behind her like the seductive veil of a bride to be. Her gown, as those of her practice accustomed to wear, was black as the night, a sharp contrast to the pale skin visible beneath. As she closed the distance between them, his heart raced and his palms became sweaty. She was beautiful. Her face was grim, her azure eyes set into a raging stare, yet he found her alluring. Her lips, red and plump, beckoned to him and he tightened his hold on the reins of his beast. He shook his head faintly, wondering if she was casting a spell upon him. Shrugging off the silly thought, he focused on the woman reaching him.

Slowing her horse to a stop directly before him, she spoke, her soft voice touching him like the gentle caress of a lover. Greetings, Amandus, first born of Cupid, Captain of his favored guard. Her voice was deep and melodious, matching the enchanter he knew her to be.

Greetings, Ariadne, most powerful witch of these lands.

She smiled, pleased at his words. It was a smug smile but one that travelled directly to his heart and rushed to his cock, thickening it. He swallowed, nervous. Why was he reacting so strongly to the enemy?

"I see your God has not dared appear before me." The sarcasm in her voice dripped like thick honey, but his mind paid no heed as her eyes bore into his with anger. He was not assuaged. He knew he should be furious, she’d just referred to his father as a lesser God, but butterflies danced in the pit of his stomach and his chest tightened as her eyes roved over his face.
