    Chapter One

Sarya’s fingers were freezing. Even the special thermo gloves she’d bought weren’t keeping them warm, and she could barely see through her goggles. Without warning, it had begun to snow, and it was fast turning into a blizzard, the icy particles sticking to her visor.

Sarya, we need to get off this mountain! Theresa, her girlfriend, yelled over her shoulder.

Sarya and four of her best friends had decided to spend the Christmas holidays at Snake Pit Ski Resort. They’d been there two days and were having a great time, both skiing and in the lodge. They’d met up with a group of young men from Australia and were having a blast. Christmas was coming in a few days, and they looked forward to the Christmas Eve party they had planned, and Christmas Day, the lodge promising a feast they would never forget.

I know! The snow is blinding me. I can’t see a fucking thing! Sarya yelled back. She stopped for a minute, swiped at her goggles, but still couldn’t see a thing. Which direction did she need to go? Where had the others gone? Trying to peer through the pelting icy crystals, she couldn’t see a hand in front of her face.

Straight ahead, she muttered to herself. Just keep going straight. I just saw Theresa dead ahead of me.

She began skiing again, slowly gathering speed. The downhill slope seemed steeper than it had been the day before. Or was it her imagination? Faster and faster. She came to a ledge but realized it too late to stop. She flew through the air and fell with a thud. Gingerly, she scrambled to her hands and knees. It didn’t feel like she’d broken any bones, but she’d lost one ski. She carefully crawled around, groping for it.

While desperately searching for her lost ski, a rumbling sounded from above. Avalanche! she shouted. Oh, my God! Theresa? Ann? Diana? Julie? Can you hear me? No answer. Her numbed fingers encountered the ski. She yanked it toward her and clipped it to her boot. Theresa? she yelled again.

Just as Sarya stood and turned, ready to ski to the right, hopefully in the right direction, the rumble turned into a loud, deafening thunder. All she could think of doing was to crouch down and bury her head against her knees, protecting her head with her arms.

It was as if a train barreled down on her. She tumbled, turned, but held onto her knees for dear life, keeping her head buried between her arms. I’m done for. That’s all she could think. These are my last moments. By the time they find me, I’ll be dead. Merry Christmas, Sarya...

The barrage of snow, trees, and rocks stopped tossing her around like she was a mere ball, and she sank, the heavy blanket of moving snow sucking her under.

    Then she tumbled.

    And kept falling.

The wind got knocked out of her when she hit bottom. For moments, she lay still, then opened her eyes. Somehow, during her toss-and-tumble journey, she’d lost her goggles and her skis. It was dark, and her vision was kind of blurry, but she wasn’t buried
