Chapter One
Section One
The New Kid at School
Jimi Leroy
The school hallways were ghostly still, like no one was attending the school. In the hallway, there was a row of lockers. The lockers were lined up against the white wall. On the other side of the hallway was a row of windows, with a view of the city streets.
Windows went along the ceiling and down along the floor tiles in rows. There was a metal classroom door, which was left slightly opened. In the empty white tiled classroom were five rows of lined up tables and chairs.
The tables had steel tops and four legs on each corner for support. The chairs were similar to the tables just with black plastic replacing the steel top. There was a wooden teacher’s desk in the front of the class. The desk had drawers to the left side and to the right, with metal handles going into the drawers. The teacher’s desk had a chair pulled out slightly from the desk.
Rings of charming bells repeated down the school hallways. Students started to flow into the classroom, filling it with chatter. The entire student body had the same uniform on, black jackets with a white dress shirt underneath and dark blue dress pants and black sneakers.
On the jacket, were silver buttons, and on the left hand side was a light blue shield. The light blue shield was trimmed in gold with a golden star in the middle.
Most of the students looked like high school students. The students walked up to a chair in the classroom and started to take their seats. Right after the second bell charmed down the hallway, a teacher walked into the classroom
She stood in the front of the classroom and started to talk about the classroom. She started to go over a math lecture which was on the board behind her desk. She was just going over some of the simple math questions, which were in the handbook.
A man in a black business suit stood outside of the opened classroom door. The man’s right hand was places on the right shoulder of the teenager.
The teenage was wearing a school uniform. He has short black hair and the most gorgeous light blue eyes, which sparkled in the sunlight. He looked like he was around fourteen, around the same age as the other students in the class.
The black suited men had light brown hair, and appealing dark brown eyes. He also had a stripped dark blue tie around the collar of his shirt. The man looked like he was in his early thirties.
The teacher smiled over at the man, Hi, principle Greenwood.
He looked down at the boy, This is the new student to Greenwood Academy.
The new student smiled at the floor in front of him, My name is Jimi Leroy.
The teacher had a black business suit and dark blue jeans. She had long light brown hair that flowed over her shoulders. Her eyes were a stunning metallic grey, which could stand out for miles.
Principle Greenwood slowly walked into the classroom with Jimi following beside him. Principle Greenwood walked him to the front of the classroom, beside the teacher’s desk. The teacher stood to the right of the board behind her desk.
The teacher introduced herself, My name is Ms. Timothy.
Principle Greenwood made Jimi face the class. The entire classroom was staring directly at him. Jimi smiled at the class. His hands started to shake from how nervous he was.
Ms. Timothy told him, So, this is your math class.
Oh,
Jimi was a little shocked, Well, it’s nice to meet you all.
She told him, We were just going over the lesson for the day.
The Principle asked him, Would you like me to show you to your seat?
Jimi smiled up at him, Thank you. I would really appreciate it.
Ms. Timothy pointed out, Um, but there is one chair free that’s right in front of you.
Jimi reached for the principles arm. They walked towards the empty table and chair. He got right beside the desk and took a seat in the chair. Jimi smiled up at the teacher, but his eyes were in a daze.
She grabbed a piece of paper off of the top of her desk. She also grabbed a wooden pencil out from the glass cup, which was full of pencils. The cup was on the top right hand corner facing the class of students. She put the piece of paper and pencil down onto the desk in front of Jimi. He was seating on the chair, with his hands on the steel cold edge of the table in front of him.
The principle told him, I will be in my office. You may ask the teacher, if you have any questions. I have to get back to some work. Have a nice day.
Jimi smiled up at the front of the class, Thank you, Principal Greenwood.
Principle Greenwood headed towards the front of the classroom and headed straight for the door. He walked out of the classroom and headed down into the empty hallway. The teacher was standing in front of the classroom. She stood to the right side of her wooden desk.
The teacher asked Jimi, Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Jimi cleared his throat, I just moved here from Tokyo, Japan. I was born in Canada and raised in Japan.
Ms. Timothy was intrigued, What brings you to New York Island?
Jimi smiled with his eyes still in a daze, My father grew up on the upper eastside, in Manhattan. So, he thought that we should come back here, especially after my accident.
Ms. Timothy was concerned, What accident?
He looked down at top of the table in front of him, Well, I’m not ready to talk about it.
She asked him, Is there anything we should know about you?
One of the students beside him said, Just another weirdo to add to the class.
He smirked, Just a little thing, but it’s nothing.
She asked him, What is it?
A girl to her right whispered, Maybe he’s gay.
A boy chuckled in a whisper, That would be a first.
Jimi sat back in his chair, I’m blind.
Ms. Timothy stood stunned in the front of the classroom. The entire class had their eyes glued on him, like he said something horrifying.
A girl whispered in the back, What kind of a sick joke is that?
A boy whispered to the girl, Well, just think about it. Who gets the principle to show them to a desk, which is right in front of him?
Jimi had a smirk across his face, And it’s great, I can’t even tell if you all are staring at me or if you all are just bored. That also means that I can’t see the way you look. What is on the board in front of the class?
Ms. Timothy walked over to her chair, This is fascinating. I never had a blind student in any of the years of teaching.
Jimi told her, But I also can’t read any of the things you put on the board. I can still write what you say down onto a piece of paper. I just need someone to read it to me.
Ms. Timothy told him, Don’t worry about taking notes. I will just give you handouts and I am sure that one of your classmates won’t mind reading them to you.
Jimi smiled, Thank you, Ms. Timothy.
Ms. Timothy smiled out at the class, And maybe someone could show you around the school.
A female student behind Jimi had short blond hair, and dark brown eyes. She raised her hand up into the air. The female student was taking notes down, on a piece of paper in front of her.
She smiled at Jimi, I won’t mind showing him around Ms. Timothy.
Ms. Timothy agreed, Thank you, Clay Andrew. I am sure that your help will be appreciated very much.
Jimi whispered at the teacher, Is she right behind me?
Ms. Timothy nods her head with a smile, Yes she is.
Clay tapped Jimi on his right shoulder, Hi.
He smiled over his shoulder at her, Hi.
Ms. Timothy said, We should get back to the lesson for the day. I will get you the handouts after class.
Jimi faced the front of the class, That would be great, thank you.
The teacher continued her lesson that was on the board. Jimi was listening to her explain everything to the class. He was very confused about some of the things she was talking about. But he just sat in his seat twirling his fingers around each other.
Section Two
Step One Make Friends
Clay Andrew
Clay walked down the school hallway with Jimi at her side. She allowed him to put his right hand on her left shoulder. He walked to her left side, as they went down the hallway.
She tried to make small talk, So, you’re from Japan.
He corrected her, Actually, I am from Canada, just raised in Japan. But I guess you can say that I grew up there.
She asked him, What do you mean?
He explain it to her, I was home schooled. My parents were the only ones, which really could help me get used to Japan. I used to live in New York for seven years and then I moved to Tokyo for seven years.
She said, But you were born in Canada.
He smiled, My parents were there for work.
She smiled over at his wondering eyes, So, do you remember when you could see?
He told her, I was born blind, so I never got a chance to see what I was missing.
She frowned, Well, you are missing a lot.
He smiled, Not like I would know.
She stopped in front of a locker, This would be your locker.
Jimi put his hands out in front of him. He felt around the door of the locker, till he touched his fingertips up against cold metal lock. He smiled at Clay, as he opened the locker door. He felt around the inside of the locker.
She told him, You got nothing inside.
He smiled, I know, I was just was getting the feel of how much space is inside.
She told him, Cool. Well I have a club meeting I have to go attend to. You should go get your lunch.
He told her, I already ate. I guess you have a bad memory.
Clay giggled, Ok, but you should walk around the school and get used to the place.
He smiled, I guess I could do that. Do you mind me asking what this club is about?
She explained it to him, It’s just a ‘go green’ club that’s here in school. It was my idea. I guess you can call me the founder of the club, or something.
He smirked, Sounds cool. Can I go with you, or is it a private club?
Jimi put his hands out of the locker and felt around for the door handle. He closed the locker door as he placed his right hand onto her left arm. She started to walk down the hallway with him.
Clay told him, Sure, but you don’t have to join it, if you don’t want to.
He asked her, Why not?
She said, Club’s aren’t for everybody, there are also a lot of other clubs. I wouldn’t want you to join a club just because I’m in it.
Jimi told her, Don’t judge a book by its cover. I might not look like a team player, but I am actually very good at playing sports.
Clay was a little surprised, How does that work exactly?
He explained, Well, there are beepers that you can put on the basketball hoops and net. And my other senses are heightened because of not having my eye sight.
She smirked at him, Cool, I didn’t think that actually happened. I thought that was more like a myth.
He told her, No it does happen to most people.
Clay stopped outside of a classroom door. She reached for the metal handle and gave it
