Saturday Surprise and Other Stories - Scarlett Knight

    1988.

    Saturday Surprise

When Blake opened the door that sunny Saturday morning, the last thing she expected to see was Jacob. He leaned against the doorframe with aviator sunglasses atop his head, hands shoved deep in his jean pockets. His darkly lashed chocolate eyes gave her that familiar puppy-dog look.

Hey, he said, a cocky half-grin bringing the dimples out on his cheek. You look great.

Nearly too stunned to move, Blake had to catch her breath before she tore herself away from the door handle. Then she lifted her arm and slapped the satisfied expression off his face. Jacob jumped back with a start, and his dimples disappeared. His hand went up to touch the spot she’d hit. Rubbing against the rough five-o’-clock shadow on his cheek, he cleared his throat.

I guess I deserved that, he said.

    You guess? she hissed.

He turned his head to the side, as if fully realizing the situation. Hi, Blake.

Hi, Jacob. Saying his name was like swishing poison around in her mouth. How long’s it been? Four? Five years?

Four and a half, actually. But who’s counting?

She narrowed her hazel eyes. Her long blonde hair was freshly washed and down after her jog. She wore a pair of soft blue shorts and matching tank top that left nothing of her voluptuous figure to the imagination. But despite her feminine appearance, the look on her face was enough to strike fear into even the strongest of men. Jacob, however, kept pressing on.

Can I come in? he asked.

How did you find me? Her tone was colder than ice.

He straightened his posture and placed a hand on the door frame where he’d leaned before. Your mother, actually. I stopped by your parents’ house once I got back into town. She told me where you were living now.

She’d have to have a talk with that woman. Did her mother not understand that Jacob had broken her heart? That when he’d left for L.A. to try and become the big, hot-shot actor, he promised to call Blake and fly back frequently so they could continue their relationship? And that not only did he stop calling, he stopped answering her calls?

She’d been doing so well. She’d finally moved on, started dating again. Granted, nothing serious was really happening in the romance department, but she was getting out and meeting people and finally not thinking about Jacob every minute of every day. And now this.

Why are you back? she said.

Can I come in, or are we going to have an entire conversation on your porch?

You can come in when I say you can come in!

The silence that hung in the air was heavy with resentment.

Look, he said, his voice low and serious. I’m sorry I stopped calling. L.A. was a total failure. I didn’t make it, and I also got into some bad shit out there. You wouldn’t have liked who I was. I was ashamed to talk to you. I knew you wouldn’t approve of my lifestyle. He sighed. "I straightened up, though. I had a revelation. Maybe sometime I could tell you
