Belinda had been alone for more than a year now. She had lived on the mountain farm from her birth and now that her daddy was gone, she had just kept on alone. She’d considered over the past year that maybe she should travel out of the mountain valley to the town that her daddy had told her of, but she had never left her mountain home since her birth and the idea of meeting new people was both exciting and terrifying.

Her momma had died when she was only three, trying to bring her brother into the world. Her brother had gone with her into wherever the spirits of the dead went, and that had just left her and daddy for the past many years. The two of them had built a life here, and he had taught her everything she needed to know to live in the remote valley; skills she would be eternally grateful for in the months after his death.

Daddy had broken his back in a fall while hunting. He’d lain upon the rock that did him in for three days before Belinda had found him, and by the time she’d returned with the mule that plowed their fields, he’d lost most of his vitality. For five long months she’d managed the farm; working the fields, caring for the animals, and nursing her progressively weakening father. By the day he died, Belinda was sick herself. She’d worked herself feverishly to manage it all alone until his last day. When he finally gave up the fight, she’d cried for three days, and then returned the fields where she had buried him first then tended the crops once more.

She’d quickly figured out that she could survive on a fraction of what their fields produced and had let the outer fields go fallow, not worried about doing more than surviving for the time being. She had survived the winter quite well, and though she hadn’t made the trek to trade, she had ample surpluses thanks to her father’s preparedness and her own frugality. She’d recently grown to where her mother’s old clothes would fit her, and her own were still in good shape, so it would be some time before she had to worry about that. On the other hand it was lonely out here, and she wanted for company so much that she began to worry about her mind.

That all changed the night she first heard the wolves. They were among her flocks, but in the darkness she could do nothing. Her father, big strong and brave, might have gone out to try and fend them off, but Belinda had no chance against a pack so large and she knew it. When the sun rose the next morning, she had only nine sheep where there had been twenty and it took her almost all day to round those up and get them in the barn paddock.

That night, she determined not to lose any more, and driving them into the barn and baring the door she spent the night with her father’s old shotgun sitting in the rafters waiting. If the wolves broke into the barn, they were going to get paid back for their raiding. That night and the next she slept little but the wolves did not return until the third night. She could not understand how they got in, for they seemed to open the doors; something that only a human should have been able to do, but there were five of them and they were huge. The sheep were below her in a stall and the wolves were so focused on them that they must not have noticed her in the rafters until she gave the lead wolf both barrels from the old shotgun, and watched as the shot ripped the animals head to pieces.

Belinda thought surely the animal was dead, and that that remainder would flee, but the grizzled visage merely looked up at her with deadly intent from its single remaining eye. She was so terrified that she could not open the breech of the old gun to reload, and watched in terror as one of the beasts began to climb the ladder much like a man with paws that seemed transformed into twisted parodies of human limbs.

A sound from the door caused both wolf beast and woman to look in that direction. A man stood in the doorway, holding a sword that Belinda imagined had been pulled from the pages of some story book. The wolves turned on the man as one; even the wolf climbing the ladder dropped back to the ground. Together they leapt at the man but he moved with such speed that Belinda could not follow his movements.

His movements were swift and he seemed to stop and then move in little spurts and with each sudden movement another wolf lay dying, only they no longer resembled wolves, each was taking on the form of a man. It was so bizarre, and Belinda was under such fear and stress that she swooned, and remembered no more a few seconds later.

When she awoke, she was in the house, a cup of warm sweet milk held to her lips. She was so used to being alone now that the presence of another was more pressing a matter than the milk, which smelled delicious. Without really moving she looked up at her savior, seeing the stranger now, up close for the first time. He was older, but not as old as her father had been. He looked sophisticated like some of the gentlemen gracing the pages of some of the books her mother had left behind and which she had never learned to read.

Drink he said, his soft voice surprising her. It will help you relax.

Following his directions she took a sip of the drink only then realizing that it contained some smooth liqueur that warmed her from within and brought a blush to her face. Her father had sometimes drank some of his home brew, but she had found the stuff nasty and never
