    CHAPTER 1

    Let me tell you about your buddy, Ash began. Ash was taking Britt to the studio where his contact taught an actors class. Ash drove a deep blue, fastback 1966 Ford Mustang with white racing stripes that ran from the hood to the trunk. He called it his ‘Cobra’. Britt loved the car; it was like Branden’s, Britt thought, only smaller, faster and sportier. Still, she decided, were she given a choice between the two, she would pick the cherry-red, 1959 Chevrolet Impala, mostly because it was big, had fins and was a convertible. Britt decided that big cars and convertibles and Southern California just seemed to fit together. We were neighbors together in Nashville, Ash said, he was always looking for acting jobs and I was always looking to sell a stage play or get some sort of writing gig.

    "We knew each other only casually as neighbors in the same business, but we really got to know one another when one of my plays was picked up and Branden was cast as the third lead. It was a good part, supporting the main characters. The play was called Khing, an adaption from one of my never-selling fantasy novels. Remember this is in Nashville, which usually doesn’t go for this kind of story, but the production company prided itself on being ‘avant-garde’ so to speak, making it kind of an ‘Off-Nashville’ piece.
