Gerald Lopez
Gerald was called to write at various times in his life. When he was young, the writing consisted of plays and short stories. Then he explored the fine arts and literature, earning a bachelor’s degree in the latter while minoring in art history. In his studies he was fascinated by and enjoyed analyzing characters, their personalities and motivations. To him it’s always been the characters who make a story special. Once again writing has taken hold of him. In the past it was just an amusement, but now—for Gerald—writing is a passion to live, eat, and breathe.

For Love of: Colt
Author’s Notes
When we last left our heroes, Colt and Tangi they had survived torturing their parents over the mistaken idea that Colt was about to be lobotomized. Colt was able to stand tall and proud as an out
gay man with his boyfriend Tangi by his side. Friends and family had made peace with one another, the past, and their future.
It was the homecoming dance, where Colt and Tangi were crowned homecoming kings and shared the first dance. The night was winding down and they'd made their way outside for some quiet time on the terrace. The stars were out and Colt and Tangi were doing what came naturally….
Chapter 1
Absolute Bliss
TANGI LOVED the feel of Colt’s lips against his, and how their bodies seemed made to fit perfectly against one another. He let out a contented sigh.
Are you OK?
Colt said.
I’m more than OK,
Tangi said. After everything we’ve been through, it feels so great out here. Like it’s just the two of us in the world.
"That’s because it is great," Colt said, as he heard a door open and slam shut behind them, then the sound of a couple giggling.
Colt and Tangi turned around to see a blond couple kissing with their arms around one another. Tangi laughed and Colt, with one arm still around Tangi’s waist, waved his finger at the couple in a scolding manner.
Now, now, you two,
Colt said. If you don’t stop that, we’ll have to report your naughty behavior back to your parents.
Oh, yeah,
the man said, then looked up from where he was nibbling on the woman’s neck. Shoot!
He let go of the woman and straightened his shirt and jacket. Hi, Son, how’s it going?
Colt’s parents both tried to straighten up their somewhat rumpled clothes, and his mom wiped her lipstick off his dad’s cheek.
Hey, how’s ‘bout a ten to keep this just between us,
Mr. Asbury said, walking up to his son and patting him on the back.
No worries,
Colt said. We’ll keep this just between us, buddy.
He and his dad looked at each other and laughed. Mr. Asbury pointed to Mrs. Asbury, then to Colt, and turned back to Mrs. Asbury.
I like this guy, he’s like totally cool, babe,
Mr. Asbury said.
Like fer sure,
Mrs. Asbury said, then smiled.
Everyone laughed.
I think my parents have regressed back to their days in high school,
Colt said.
I think they didn’t have to go too far back,
Tangi said.
Good one, Tangi,
Mr. Asbury said.
By the way, Mr. Asbury, I think what you and the other dads did back there on the dance floor was awesome,
Tangi said. To see you big ex-footballers dancing together, just to shut up the people who didn’t like Colt and me being named homecoming kings was just… I don’t even know what to say.
It’s cool,
Mr. Asbury said. And there was only one person who had an issue with you guys.
And you know her issue wasn’t really with you two,
Mrs. Asbury said, before changing the subject. As much as I’m all for family togetherness and bonding, this terrace area is feeling a wee bit crowded to me.
Then my man and I will leave you two alone and go explore the gardens,
Tangi said, reaching for Colt’s hand and taking it.
"You and your man go right on ahead, Mr. Asbury said, smiling.
My hot date Lena and I will just stay up here and out of your way."
Tangi started pulling Colt away, so Colt smiled at his parents, waved, then spoke. I just love a man who takes charge.
He raised his eyebrows, smiled, and followed Tangi to the stairs with his parents watching.
As soon as they were gone, Colt’s parents looked at each other and laughed. Is it wrong that I found what Colt just said hilarious?
Mr. Asbury said to his wife. And is it weird that I love how Colt felt so free to say that to us, Lena?
No more wrong than hearing you say that… has me wanting you more than ever.
Lena turned to her husband and kissed him passionately on the lips. You are the perfect man, Blake Asbury.
She smiled, then squeezed his ass.
What would the chaperones say?
Mr. Asbury said.
We are the chaperones,
Mrs. Asbury said, then shut her husband up with a kiss.
AS SOON as they’d gotten downstairs and turned the corner, Tangi had Colt against the windowless downstairs wall of the country club, kissing him on the lips. Both of them were breathing heavily.
Oh my God, that feels so good, Tangi,
Colt said, as Tangi lightly chewed on his ear and neck.
Tangi took Colt’s hand again, and they walked across the side lawn of the country club toward the gated entrance to the formal garden. Both of them looked at each other and smiled.
You’re so aggressive tonight that I can’t believe I ever mistook you for a girl when we first met,
Colt said, raising Tangi’s hand to his lips and kissing it.
Well, I did have that book bag in front of my face, and all you saw were my eyes and long auburn hair.
And that’s all I needed to see before I fell head over heels in love and asked you to have lunch with me.
Colt gently brushed a finger against Tangi’s long eyelashes. You are so beautiful, Tangi, that you barely look human to me. You’re so much more than just a mere mortal.
Being mortal is fine with me,
Tangi said. It’d be boring being a demigod; I’d rather live here on Earth with you.
Thank you for that… thank you for everything.
They kissed again, before walking through the gate and into the garden hand in hand.
I just thought of something,
Tangi said.
What?
Colt said.
Your parents are the chaperones, and they’re probably making out upstairs as we speak.
Yup,
Colt said. Should we go turn the hose on them?
I don’t think it would work on those two. Besides, looking at them gives me a glimpse of how we’ll be at their age.
That’s a long time from now… we’re only high school seniors. But I’m glad you see us still together when we’re old.
Tangi got suddenly quiet and held his head down. Colt lifted his chin and looked into the green eyes, which always seemed to draw him into a whole other dimension of being.
"Hey, what happened to my aggressive date that referred to me as his man in front of my parents?"
Tangi laughed, then spoke. You are my man, now get over here.
He pulled him close, kissed him hard on the lips, then pushed his tongue through to find Colt’s tongue.
You two need to get a room, already.
They looked up to see Colt’s best friend Mickey looking at them and smiling. He had his arm around his date Tabi.
Yeah, it’s bad enough we ran into your parents making out on the terrace, Colt,
Tabi said. And Mickey’s dad and Mrs. Miriam are making out downstairs—some chaperones.
She laughed. They are kind of cute.
Tangi was just saying that it bodes well for us when we get old,
Colt said.
Well, it doesn’t ‘bode well’ for us now,
Mickey said. Let’s say you guys take the left path and we take the right.
I’ll do you one better, buddy,
Colt said. Just give Tangi and me the bench under the big live oak tree, and the rest of this place is yours.
Excuse me,
Jayla Lee said, as she and Kincaid entered the area.
Yeah, you four lovebirds aren’t the only ones trying to enjoy the scenery,
Kincaid said.
Everyone laughed… and once things were sorted out, Colt and Tangi headed toward the bench under the live oak tree.
Tangi, what has gotten into you tonight?
Colt said. The way you told the others the bench was ours period was so in control, I loved it.
Maybe, you’re more passive than you thought you were, Colt. And I can be more dominant than you imagined.
Colt took a minute to think about what Tangi just said, then he smiled, but didn’t say a word. Even a macho football player knew when to keep his mouth shut.
As they walked to the tree and bench, Colt’s thoughts drifted. He remembered how terrified and helpless he’d felt when he’d realized he had to tell his parents he was gay and in love. There were a lot of tears and pain, but they’d been there for him. His friends had taken longer to come around. But they all came through for him when he was scared his parents were going to have him lobotomized. He laughed out loud at the thought of the crazy times behind him. It felt good when Tangi put an arm around his waist and held him close by his side.
This feels nice,
Colt said. Having your arm around me, knowing you’re here keeping me safe.
I’m not as big and buff as you, but I know how to keep my man safe.
It’s so funny the way you keep referring to me as yours, I really like it… a lot.
They arrived at the bench and sat down on it. Colt turned and leaned back with the back of his head on Tangi’s chest, and Tangi wrapped his arms around him.
Oh, man, this is my idea of Heaven, Tangi.
It’s absolute bliss,
Tangi said. He reached for Colt’s hand, held it to his mouth, and kissed it.
I knew you were there, you know,
Colt said. That night when I was sick and you slept by my side in my bed. When I woke up, I thought I’d just been dreaming, but you were really there and I felt so good and loved… and safe. Then all the craziness happened… the whole coming-out mess.
It wasn’t really that much of a mess,
Tangi said.
Tell that to my dad, who got tasered by Mick; or to coach, who got tackled. Not to mention my mom, who got duct taped and thrown in the closet by my extremely supportive brother Neil.
Tangi laughed, then apologized. Sorry, I shouldn’t have laughed at that. But you know what? It showed you how loved you are by your family and friends.
Yeah, they’re all pretty great, especially my folks.
I wish you would’ve been really alert when your dad walked into your room the night you were sick. It was like he knew about us, and he handed you over for me to take care of.
He looked down at the bracelet Colt had given him, which he always wore. I don’t think I’ll ever forget when he helped you put this bracelet back on me after I tried to give it back. He told me never to take it off, because he didn’t ever want to see you hurt again.
Was I hysterical when you took it off?
Colt said. I sort of remember being upset about it.
Yeah, you were pretty upset. You asked your dad not to let me take it off. And he was there for you, by your side. The way he brought our hands together like—
He knew,
Colt said. "I don’t remember everything that happened clearly… but even then, Dad knew, and he was trying to tell me—us actually, that it was OK. Our being gay was OK by him. He turned so he could wrap his arms around Tangi’s waist, then rested his head against him again.
This is nice."
You’ve said that a couple of times already.
Yeah, I guess I have. It’s just that, that… this is so strange.
What do you mean strange?
Tangi said.
Not a bad kind of strange,
Colt said. Just different, but in a good way. I just feel so completely relaxed and comfortable around you… like I can be myself. Whatever that self happens to be at the moment. Like, if I feel like it, I can just sweep you up into my arms and be the aggressive one, or… like now, I can just rest in your arms and be held by you.
Why is that strange?
Colt’s cell phone rang and he jumped. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his cell phone, and answered it. After listening to the caller for a few seconds, he spoke. Oh, crap.
Chapter 2
Alone Time
MICK, LET me call you back in just a couple minutes,
Colt said. I know, I know. I’ll call you right back.
He ended the call.
What’s wrong?
Tangi said.
Listen in, and if you disagree with what I’m doing just pat me on the shoulder.
OK,
Tangi said.
Colt found his dad’s number on his cell, pressed the button, then talked. Hey, Blake, it’s your good buddy Colt. Listen, dude, how’s about doing a bud a favor? … Yeah. … No, no it’s not that.
Colt laughed. Get your mind out of the gutter, pal. That’s you two, not us. You guys are staying a while to get homecoming reunion pictures taken and whatever, right? … Can we hitch a ride back with you two, Uncle Cameron, and Uncle Luke—if there’s room? … Thanks. … Yeah, everything’s fine, we’d just rather stay here by ourselves a while longer. … OK, yeah, later dude.
He ended the call, then brought up Mick’s number. Hey, Mick, you guys go on without us. … Yeah, we’re gonna enjoy some alone time out here. Just think of it as more room in the limo for the rest of you. … Have a good one. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do. … No, that would not leave you nothing to do, dummy. I was just joking, have a good time, ya idiot. … Bye, you’re a good friend too, now hang up.
He laughed, closed his cell phone, and put it back in his pocket. They are all something else.
You’re something else,
Tangi said, rolling on top of Colt and kissing him.
The kiss was soft, yet it made Colt’s entire body tingle. Tangi’s lips completely encompassed his, and their tongues were like one. They weren’t going at it as if in a feverish battle. It was more like a slow seductive dance, and Colt felt like they were melting into each other, becoming one. He stretched out his body, letting his legs hang off the bench, then pulled Tangi closer to him.
I’m not too heavy, am I?
Tangi said.
No,
Colt said, in a hushed voice. I like the way you feel against me. Hold me tight… squeeze me.
Tangi gave in, and put his full weight against Colt. He put his arms around Colt’s waist and lifted him slightly, so they could fit together even more tightly, then squeezed him with all his might and heard Colt groan. Their crotches were against one another, and even through the fabric of their pants, he could feel his body reacting to Colt, and Colt’s reacting to his. He slowly maneuvered his right leg, so it was between Colt’s legs, which opened wider to let him in. Then he rubbed Colt’s leg and crotch with his leg. Colt responded by grasping him tightly, and Tangi kissed him with all that was in him before speaking.
I love you, Colt. M… more than I’ve ever loved anyone. And I want you more than I’ve ever wanted anyone.
He sucked lightly on Colt’s ear, then moved to his neck.
Oh, man, I love that. Don’t stop, Tangi. Yeah… right there. That’s the spot. Harder, chew harder. That’s it.
Tangi made a quick note to remember that spot on Colt’s neck, as he sucked harder and harder. The more Colt got into it, the harder Tangi chewed.
I love you too, Tangi. And I’m yours completely, whatever you want to do. I’m yours.
Tangi kissed him again, and looking down, he noticed a tear fall from Colt’s eye. Colt looked up and wiped a tear from Tangi’s eyes. Then they both hugged each other tightly.
I… I… um… I know what I just said Tangi, but I don’t think I can keep this up.
"You seem pretty up to me," Tangi said.
That’s the problem. I’m gonna make a mess in my pants, if we keep this up.
Yeah, so am I.
They looked at one another and laughed, then Tangi sat up. Colt lowered his legs, got upright, wrapped his arms around Tangi, and leaned forward against him. They were silent for a few minutes, then they heard an owl, and laughed again.
That was great, really great,
Colt said. Especially the neck thing you did. You need to remember that.
I already made a mental note of it. What do we do now? It’s pretty dark out here, we can rub one out really quick if you want.
No, that’s OK. Mine has started going down already. Is that OK with you, Tangi?
Yeah, mine’s going down too, anyway. That felt so much better than I ever thought it would, Colt. And we didn’t even do anything really.
Well, what we did do was awesome. Tangi, I don’t usually cry like that.
Were you crying? Shedding a tear isn’t the same thing as crying, you know.
You’re right. And it wasn’t like crying, not really. It’s just that things felt so intense, I had to react. I’m so in love I just don’t know what to do.
He laughed, and so did Tangi. I feel like a girl in one of those stupid romance novels. Take me, my love. Take me now.
Gladly my love… gladly,
Tangi said, then kissed Colt gently without using his tongue. Even just being here with you and not doing anything right now feels… amazing!
Colt laughed. I told you it was strange.
He took Tangi’s hand and led him off the bench, out of the garden, and onto the grassy field on the other side. Once they were there, they ran from one end to the other, hand in hand, before falling to the ground and rolling around in the grass.
Stop, we’re gonna get our tuxes dirty, and they’re rentals,
Tangi said, giving Colt a hand up.
I can see who the practical one in this relationship is gonna be,
Colt said.
You’re practical too, Colt. You’ve got your whole future planned out and everything.
So do you, Tangi. I guess we’re just a couple of strange weirdos.
No, we’re not,
Tangi said. Why do you keep using the word ‘strange’ tonight?
I don’t know,
Colt said. He looked down on the ground and shuffled his feet, as was his way when he got nervous.
We shouldn’t have secrets from one another, Colt. Not ever.
He raised Colt’s chin up, then kissed him. Now, tell me what’s been on your mind.
They walked over to a live oak tree on the edge of the field, whose branches nearly touched the ground. After Colt sat down on a branch, he looked up at Tangi and spoke. I don’t even know how to say this.
Then just say it.
Colt looked up at Tangi sheepishly, then said what was on his mind. Well, you know what people say about gays.
What?
Tangi said.
You know… about how… OK, I’m just gonna say it. How one guy is the bottom like a girl, and one guy is the top like a guy.
I’ve heard something like that, but I don’t think if someone’s a bottom it means they’re the girl. We’re two guys, no matter what we do.
Yeah, but you’ve seen gay guys who act sort of girly.
Yeah.
Tangi thought he was finally beginning to understand what Colt was thinking. Just because a guy likes to bottom, doesn’t mean he’s a girl, or has to act like a girl. And I bet some guys who top, don’t act really macho either.
The thing is, Tangi,
Colt looked down at his feet, then back up into Tangi’s eyes. "I really liked that you took over tonight. I mean, I like being a strong man too; but tonight, it felt good to let you lead. If we’d been alone somewhere else, I might’ve—you know. No, that’s not true, there’s no might’ve about it. I would’ve let you do anything and everything you wanted to do to me. And I’m pretty sure I would’ve liked it too… a lot. Does that
