Chapter 1
Tobaccoville, Virginia 1861
Rozella was done feeling sorry for herself. Having been widowed early on in life, most of her efforts had been spent taking care of her twins. Now that both of them were all grown and married in the West, she spent lonely days living on her own. The little shack that had been their home ever since the twins were young now seemed too large for her. She had been used to having the two of them around.
Rozella trudged back from work at Blue Jack’s farm. Over the years, she had become accustomed to the routine and was well familiar with it. Each day she left for the farm where she worked the entire day, tilling the land or doing other manual duties. She had taken up the job after her husband died in an accident at the well after he fell hitting his head. She considered herself lucky Blue Jack had taken pity on her back then after she showed up with two young kids in her tow. He not only gave her a job but also a house for her and the kids to live in. That had been many years ago.
Fluffy, the cat, walked up to her as soon as she got home. His loud call for her attention could only be from hunger and she went in to get him something to eat
You seem pretty hungry these days. I wonder what it is you do when I am gone the entire day,
she posed jokingly at the cat, now hungrily drinking some milk she had poured into his bowl. Done with the milk, the cat purred as he went to lie curled up at her feet.
At times like this she often missed her girls. It had not been an easy thing for her to let them off, one after the other, to go and get married to men they encountered through the newspaper. Even though she did not object to their going away to be Mail Order Brides, she had been skeptical of the arrangement. Now as they were settled and often wrote to inform her of their progress, she could not be happier. Her faith stayed in God who had seen all three of them thus far.
The cat had found his way onto her lap where he lay softly purring. She had been so engrossed in her thoughts and did not see him climb onto her knees. Lifting him slowly to place him on his bed, she could not help noticing he was getting heavier by the day.
You just go to sleep right there. It looks like this is all you do these days, lazy cat.
She was rewarded with a lazy stare before the cat went back to sleep.
Rozella went out to light the fire to get the evening meal going. She often went without lunch while away at work and at least made a meal in
