About this ebook

It is 1859 and Emaline decides to become a Mail Order Bride.

Emaline is the curious one of the twins. Brought up together with her twin sister Fanny by their widowed mother, she has always wanted to get a taste of life away from their tiny shack of a home. Life on the Blue Jack farm where they work is no easy ride. Not that they have much choice either as they would otherwise be homeless had the flush farmer not taken pity on the woman with two young kids in tow.

Tired of the misery life they have led for years, Emaline longs for a better life. It seems the only way that will happen is if she applies to be a Mail Order Bride. Aden invites her over West to be his wife after she answers his ad in the matrimonial news. The two are not without troubles, but their trust in God, as well as love for each other, takes them through turbulent times.

    Chapter 1

    Tobaccoville, Virginia 1859

Emaline was busy cleaning the chicken pen at the back of their shabby home. Reflecting on their fate now that mother was sick, she saw no hope of a better life for the three of them. This was the place where she lived with her mother and her twin sister Fanny.

Mother took care of the two of them with the meager earnings she made tilling Blue Jack’s farm for a living. They were lucky he had taken them in after the death of father after he fell hitting his head at the well fourteen years ago. The little shack made of wood planks with a flimsy door had been home for the three of them ever since. Mother went to the farm every day except Sunday to work alongside several others. Now unable to go to work after coming down with a bout of flu, she had not left her bed for three days.

Calling out to her twin to find out how far she was with preparing lunch, she slowly made her way to the fireplace set outside the house, where her sister was busy with the midday meal. They cooked in an open place encircled with a few twigs.

I am starving, are you done cooking yet? Emaline inquired from her twin. Looking up from the smoke filled enclosure that served as a kitchen, Fanny smiled at her sister.

"I am almost done now, don’t worry. I hope mother will be okay eating rice and beans yet again,’’ Fanny told her. This had been their regular food for a while now, amidst complaints from Emaline, who was a bit of a picky eater.

One would have been forgiven for not believing the two girls were twins since they were rather different. Whereas Emaline could be demanding, Fanny was the easy one who rarely had a problem with anything. Being the younger of the two, Fanny could easily pass for the older twin as she was quite responsible in her ways. Emaline, on the other hand, liked having her way with things. She might easily have passed for one who cared less, except the two girls had a profound Christian upbringing. Their mother had done a good job instilling Christian values in them both despite growing up in harsh conditions.

You need God to see you through life mother liked to remind her girls.

I had better go check on mother. Emaline got up to head over to the house. Mother lay down
