Chapter One

February 3rd, 1833- Tampa

Sunlight was streaming through the open window, and Magdalena reluctantly opened her eyes. She picked up the small pocket-watch that she kept beside her mattress- it was 7:03 in the morning. She groaned softly; why on earth was she awake so early? She sat up, blinking against the light and frowned. She hated waking up early- it meant there were more hours in the day and nothing to do to fill them up. As farming sounds soon filled the room thanks to Tampa’s small town lifestyle and early rising population, Magdalena gave up on her sleep and stormed off downstairs where her parents were seated at the breakfast table. I can’t stand living here anymore! she announced loudly, her large brown eyes were livid and her curly auburn hair seemed to crackle with rage. Her parents looked up from their teacups with mild surprise- they were used to Magdalena’s tantrums, but never this early in the morning.

They shared an amused smile as Magdalena buried her head in her arms and began to quietly snore shortly afterward. Her mother, Marguerite, reached out and smoothed Magdalena’s tangled mess of curls, knowing
