Chapter One

The car had come up behind Kadesha out of nowhere

They were on a quiet residential street, such behavior rare if not completely unheard of. The roar of the engine broke the silence, barely alerting her in warning. Moments later the muscle car, a decal of a Phoenix on its hood, swerved wildly and careened past her, nearly scraping the side mirror off Kadesha’s cobalt blue SUV. The driver leaned on his horn and Kadesha’s heart lodged in her throat. She caught a brief glimpse of the grinning offender (or was he grimacing?), the silhouette of a passenger, as he flashed by.

Her fingers tightened in a death-grip on the steering wheel and she pulled tightly to the right. Her front tires hit gravel, her speed so fast that the car fishtailed for a moment, scaring the wits out of her. She managed to wrestle back control and came to a stop while she watched the offending road hog disappear in a screech of tires around the corner up ahead, having given only a token tap on the brakes.
