    GAY SHIFTER MATE THREE

I pulled the rented jeep off the asphalt and onto the gravel road toward my old town. It’s been ten years since I left and the old Texas countryside changed little. I saw the same green fields with cattle and occasional red barn.

Wasn’t sure if I was relieved or sad. I could go home again, but I’m not sure I wanted to.

I came out at a good time for gays – if you lived in California or any of the more accepting cities. Texas put me somewhere between blacks and whites social wise. That’s not my words, by the way. I’m just repeating what nicer folk say. Although some would just say less mean.

Whatever, Travis. You want to see him.

I grit my teeth at my internal argument. Parts of Texas stick hard to the old ways. They don’t like gays, blacks, or worst of all – weres. They came ‘out of the kennel’ twenty years back.

Humanity went from disbelief, fear, to pop-culture acceptance. Like with gays, some places are better and others worse. Even the most liberal person in my hometown wouldn’t want their kin dating a were. So they stick to their side of the
