    STRAIGHT TO GAY

My lips pursed as I read over The Hidden Reviewers post. Nobody knew who he was – if he was a he. I can name over ten critics with the same caustic writing style.

Spotting a critic is easy enough. There’s a stance they all have – they walk into the place like you owe them something. Hello, I’m here to judge you and drive away your customers. Unfortunately, critics, like cockroaches, come with owning a restaurant.

I scrolled past the frown face icon.

If the pale imitation of Marquis de Sade opened a restaurant, one could imagine Le Bistro. It excels in pain, yet gives no pleasure.

A flogging instead of Le Bistro’s swill is the kinder option.

My shoulders rose as I read the rest of the review. Reviews made and closed restaurants. Decade old restaurants shut their doors after one bad review.

I haven’t experienced the displeasure of a Hidden Reviewer visit. Eventually I would. My head bobbed back and forth thinking about other reviewers. They gave me decent enough write-ups. I had the best cooks and my online reviews were great. Even a caustic reviewer will find it hard to trash my restaurant.

Still, it doesn’t hurt to be cautious.

I pushed the swinging door to the kitchen and stood there making sure all my employees saw. Most scurried but there was one that had to give attitude.

I jerked my head to the brown haired skinny chef. Bruce. Put extra effort into the soufflé. It needs to be good tonight.

He turned and let out a long exhale. His waxed eyebrows went up, and he answered in his sing-song voice. "Thanks David, I was planning on making it terrible. Don’t know what I’d do without you telling me to do a good job."

He was a good cook – great even, but it’s an old managerial trick. Convince your employees they’re failures and they’ll try harder.

I’ve had quiet inquiries from other restaurants to let them know if Bruce quit. But I couldn’t let him know he was in
