    About The Author

Robert Duke left behind his normal working life in 2009 for a trip to France to see how long he could travel on a limited budget. Nearly six years later his travels are still continuing. He has visited 13 European countries and developed a system for extending his travels for the foreseeable future by combining crafty techniques for limiting expenditure with novel ideas for earning passive income.

He spends much of his new found free time writing, as well as rediscovering his love of making computer generated noises which, he hopes, people will one day learn to recognize as music.

Who this book is for & why long-term travel can work for almost everyone.

If you have dreams about increasing your freedom and indulging your travel fantasies but are struggling to work out how to do so on a budget, then this book is for you. The first step on a big adventure can be a tough one to take: You may have doubts, fears or misconceptions that prevent you from getting started. Here are some common questions that regularly crop up:

Do I have to quit my job?

Not necessarily. While many readers of this book will be looking for a way out of an unsatisfactory working life, some may be more settled or simply not ready to take the leap yet. The methods of travel in this book can be adapted for those seeking a cheap or extended European vacation, which can be a great opportunity to test the water and see if Low Rolling long-term travel really is for you.

Do I have to be young, free and single?

No. The cheap living ideology in this book can apply to couples as well as singles and many of the options are just as suitable for 60-somethings as for those in their twenties, in fact some more so. Traveling with kids can be a problem and requires more thought and planning, but it is not impossible. It is not something I touch on in this book because I have no personal experience of it, but what I can say is that I know several long-term travelers that have well adjusted children with them that they home-school.

Wait a minute, you mentioned cheap living! Does this mean I have to give up my home comforts and luxuries?

Absolutely not. The Low Roller's goal is to attain the maximum comfort for the minimum outlay. Every individual has their own needs and desired lifestyle and the Low Rolling methods can be adapted to suit almost everyone.

Do I need a healthy bank balance to get me started?

No! That’s the whole point of this book—how to achieve your desires by finding the cheapest way of travel that works for you.

Do I need to be fit?

Healthy yes, fit no. In fact Low Rolling travel can be a great way of getting fit. Before I started traveling I was a desk-jockey showing premature signs of middle aged spread. A couple of years into my new lifestyle and I was the fittest I had ever been in my life. When you have loads of free time and a vast choice of new work possibilities the opportunities to improve your health and fitness are almost endless. Of course traveling with major health problems can be problematic and is generally not recommended, but anybody reasonably healthy will be fine.

What if I am a single female traveling alone?

There is absolutely no reason for women not to travel on their own, as millions of solo-female travelers will attest to. The much hyped stories of nightmare scenarios that you read about in the media are rare and often exaggerated. European countries are generally among the safest in the world. All you need to do is to use your common sense, just as you should do at home. The safety advice to you is pretty much the same as it is to all travelers, regardless of gender.

    Introduction to Low Rolling:

A Lifestyle Concept Not a Travel Guide

Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.

    Oscar Wilde

If you have a yearning to travel but are struggling to find a way to do it with limited financial resources, or have a European trip planned and are looking for ways to extend your traveling time by making your money go further, what follows in this book will open up new possibilities to help you achieve your goals.

This book is not your average travel guide. It is not going to list a plethora of European destinations that I think you should visit. In fact I am not going to talk about any tourist attractions at all. Each traveler has their own mental itinerary and each of these can be as different as chalk and cheese. Where you go is up to you. This book is just offering a helping hand to get yourself there.

The techniques I am going to introduce are not the usual budget travel advice for those considering backpacking through Europe. While backpacking has its merits for some, for me it is
