Mu-um! How come Seren gets to bring a friend to Wales? Bryn, Seren’s big brother, whined from the front seat. Seren and Freia groaned and rolled their eyes.

You brought a friend last summer, Mum explained patiently, even though they’d already had the argument ten times that morning. Besides, Freia’s mother couldn’t get much time off from the hospital this summer. So I said we’d have Freia for these two weeks.

Seren grinned. She couldn’t wait to have a fortnight of fun with her best friend. Normally trips to Grandma’s were boring. Grandma lived in a tiny village in the hills. The most exciting things that happened were the cows breaking into the garden or one of the hens having chicks.

Mum said the dairy farm was too much for Grandma without Gramps, but she refused to move. For the first time Seren was glad.

Best of all, Fizz, one of Aunt Tilda’s magic cats, had found a spell to let Freia understand Cat. That was brilliant, because Seren could change into a cat whenever she wanted. A small white one, with a black ear and a smudge on her nose.

Although she would miss her aunt and the cats while she was away, Seren was secretly looking forward to a magic-free holiday. It had been exciting rescuing Aunt Tilda from Tricky Trevor. But scary too. She was glad it was over.

Besides, Grandma had a cat she could cuddle, even if Phoebe was getting old. The fluffy grey cat was older than Bryn. Not as grumpy though, Seren thought, and she laughed.

I don’t know what you’re so happy about, Bryn sneered, turning round in his seat. There isn’t going to be any more to do just because you’ve got Freia with you.

Now, now, Mum said. Your aunt Tilda and I managed to entertain ourselves very well in the long summer holidays when we lived at the farm.
