Race you to the sea! Seren called to her brother. She dropped her towel on the sunbed and pulled her cap on.

Oh, Seren, grow up, Bryn grumbled. But he also tossed his things under the beach umbrella and followed her down the concrete path to the sea.

Seren heard him wincing at the hot sand under his feet as they reached the end of the walkway. Ahead of them, the sea twinkled like a lake of stars.

Seren giggled as she splashed through the shallow water. After hours travelling by plane and car, it felt great to be finally here. She loved coming to Italy at the end of the summer holidays. They came every year, to visit Nonno and Nonna – Dad’s parents – and to spend time together as a family before the new school year.

I thought cats hated water, Bryn said slyly as he waded through the waves towards her.

Shhh! Seren hissed, looking around. Someone might hear you. I knew Mum shouldn’t have told you and Dad.

How were you going to keep it a secret that you can turn into a cat, especially when Dad’s allergic to cats?

I managed fine enough, she snapped, and I promised Mum I wouldn’t change in the house or anywhere near Dad. She looked at his mocking expression and something twigged. You’re jealous!

Jealous? Bryn said incredulously. Jealous because Aunt Tilda did one of her wonky spells and turned you into a cat? Why would I be jealous? But his face was twisted
