The bell rang. Seren’s heart lifted like a balloon. School was finished for the year! Just a long summer of fun and adventure ahead.

She gathered up her things and followed the throng out to the school gate. As she reached the door her happiness drained away. Wriggling nerves fidgeted in her tummy as she remembered who was waiting for her. What had possessed her to invite Billy over after school?

Are you coming to the park, Seren? her best friend Freia asked, falling in step beside her. We can plan what we’re going to do next week.

I can’t. Seren shook her black hair until it covered her face. I said I’d help Billy with something, She stared at her shoes and tried to ignore the incredulous look on Freia’s face.

Billy? School bully and generally horrible boy Billy?

Seren winced at the disbelief in Freia’s voice. Billy had been horrible to Seren for the whole school year. But – now she knew why he was mean – Seren found she wasn’t angry any more.

He’s not so bad, really, she said quietly to Freia. His step-brothers wind him up, that’s all.

That doesn’t mean you have to spend time with him. Freia gave Seren an odd look. "You don’t want to be his girlfriend do you?"

Seren pulled a face. Yuk! No! If you must know, he’s frightened of something and I’m helping him get over it.

Freia twisted her blonde ponytail round and round as she frowned at Seren. But he was so awful to you, I don’t get it.

I’ll be okay, Freia. I have to do this. I’ll catch up with you later? She didn’t like to see her friend
