Larry Murray

Born and raised in rural Idaho, Larry’s childhood on the family farm was rich in work, as well as opportunities to explore the natural world. What was missing, was exposure to the broader world, lying somewhere beyond the fence line of the farm. All that changed as he learned to read on his own. Although farm life left little time for reading, stolen hours between chores, or when he was supposed to be asleep at night, were spent devouring every book he could get his hands on. If the author could describe it, Larry could imagine it, and together they traveled around the world, across the solar system, and on to the stars beyond.Growing up in the midst of the space race and triumphant moon landing, Larry was drawn to the technical disciplines. He amassed decades of technical writing before embarking on his own adventure, writing his first novel. You can find out more about Larry and his current projects at LarryCMurray.com.

    Author's Note

    Introduction

In my business, I have the opportunity of working with MOVA® motion globes on a daily basis and have done so for more than seven years. It has been and continues to be a fascinating experience. Over the years, I have learned more about the globes than I ever thought possible and in fact have had the opportunity to speak with the inventor of these marvelous globes on multiple occasions. This book details what I have learned on my journey of discovery and explores the answers to many of the most common questions I have received from hundreds of MOVA® globe owners around the world.

In 2006, when I saw my first advertisement on Hammacher Schlemmer for the original six inch MOVA® globe models, I was totally amazed. (At that time there were only two models available, the blue ocean relief and the blue ocean satellite view.) As I watched an online animation of the globe in operation, I was hooked! I was more than a little mystified by how they worked, and in retrospect, I think I may have become a bit obsessive. I scoured the World Wide Web and devoured every explanation I could find on their operational theory. No scrap of information was too insignificant, no detail too obscure. The more I learned, the more intrigued I became. As you can imagine, it wasn't too long before I convinced myself that I simply had to have one. In fact, I think my mental gymnastics included some reasoning along the lines of I can't live without one!

Being in the business of retail sales, I wasn't content to simply own a MOVA® globe, and so I started my quest to be able to sell the revolutionary globes through our own retail outlets. It took more than a year to secure a dealership. At that time, Turtle Tech Design was an understaffed startup company, and it was quite a challenge to find and make contact with the necessary decision makers. After numerous emails and seemingly countless phone calls, my efforts and persistence finally paid off. I can't adequately describe the thrill it was to receive our first shipment of globes and to know that I was finally going to be part of introducing this fascinating product to people all across North America. This book is the next step in the process of enabling everyone to have access to the information and knowledge necessary to more thoroughly enjoy their MOVA® globe.

Thank you for allowing me to share this passion with you. I hope you find it as fascinating and enjoyable as I always have.

    Available Globes

In 2006, there were two MOVA® globe models available, and they were marketed through a tiny handful of outlets. The selection process was pretty straight forward. The 6 inch diameter globe was the only size option and in regard to cartography, either you preferred to have political information on your globe or you preferred the pristine satellite image. The greatest limiting factor was the $500 price tag which put the globes well beyond the reach of most consumers, at least for an impulse buy.

As of January 2013, there are 29 models in the active MOVA® globe lineup. The original 6 inch globes have been augmented by the introduction of the 4.5 inch, 8.5 inch, and 10 inch models. According to the manufacturer, there is a 15 inch model in development, and it was originally scheduled for availability in 2012. As of this 2014 revision, the availability has been pushed to 2015 or beyond.

In North America, the 4.5 inch, 6 inch, and 8.5 inch globes are all readily available through literally dozens of retail outlets. The retail price for the 6 inch models has dropped by approximately 25% and the introduction of the popular 4.5 inch models has brought the price of the globes within reach of a much larger portion of the population.

The cartographic options have increased as well. There are now 22 models of earth globes available in numerous colors and a variety of political and non-political maps. Ocean colors range from the always
