Roller skating is a hobby most children will want to try at least once in their childhood. I
t’s a great way for your child to build confidence and independence, as well as working on their motor skills, fitness and of course, developing muscle mass too.
For some children, roller skating might come rather naturally and you’ll find them cruising around easily after a few practice sessions, but others might need a little bit more of a helping hand. Whatever their age and ability – don’t forget the safety equipment: a helmet is always an absolute must, and we also recommend knee, elbow and wrist pads.
What’s the difference between Quad Skates and Inline Skates?
One of the most obvious differences in choices when it comes to roller skates for children is whether to opt for quad style skates or inline skates. Quad roller skates have four wheels – two at the front and two at the back – and the broader base and weight bearing makes balancing much easier.
Quad skates allow you to get the gist of shifting your body weight and pushing forward, without the worry of your foot wobbling from side to side. This, as well as the brake typically being at the front toe of the boot, puts less stress on growing ankles. Most quad skates will be suitable for indoor skating, for example at a roller rink, but do check the individual manufacturer’s recommendations.
