Secrets. We’ve all got them. Dark and delicious secrets. Often times the secrets are mysterious and intimate. Some are simple while others are complicated. Either way, we guard them like treasures. I’m not talking about the kind of secrets that girlfriends share while idly chatting on the phone and giggling the afternoon away.

These kinds of secrets are the ones only our own heart knows. Far too sacred to ever speak of, too valued to become cheap and trashy gossip. Have you ever wanted somebody you couldn’t have? They are untouchable to your heart in spite of the fact that they are part of your daily life in some manner or another.

You yearn for the person so much that you imagine what they would taste and feel like if you got the chance to run your tongue and fingers down their body. Their smell is already imprinted in your mind because every time you’re near them, you close your eyes and inhale deeply. You dream about them whether you’re asleep or not. Dreams so real that you awaken with a racing heart, thinking and hoping, did it really happen?

The simplest things remind you of them. It might be a scent in the wind, a scene in a movie, or something touching that you read in a book. Whatever it is, you pause as your mind fills with thoughts of them and a smile forms at the corners of your mouth as a memory of that person replays in your head. Sadness often follows a lonely sigh or perhaps a tear drop because the want, the need, is so strong for that other person.

The person might be a casual acquaintance, a co-worker, a college classmate, the cashier at the grocery store, the mailman, a neighbor or even your best friend. Such is the case, in my situation. I’ve carried my intimate secret with me for eighteen of the twenty-three years of my life.

Do you believe in love at first sight? I do. I’ll never forget the first time I laid eyes on him. I remember it like it just happened yesterday. He wore brand new jeans, red sneakers and a navy blue polo shirt. In those days, he wore his brown hair parted on the left, now he keeps it shaved into a flattop.

His most stunning feature by far has to be his deep blue eyes. I could spend hours lost in his eyes, if I could stare at him that long without making an ass out myself, anyway.
