Madeleine 

A literature term attributed to the French author Marcel Proust for something that triggers memories or nostalgia.

She is overwhelmed; the baby’s crying, the mother is crying. She looks young, I would say in her early twenties, and there is no ring on her finger. At this park on a cool late afternoon, she is alone with the child, cradling the baby in her arms and smothering her with kisses. This action ceases both their tears.

Poor mother! Here comes an older woman running over to them. She screams, My grandbaby! then snatches the infant from the mother’s arms without acknowledging her.

I overhear the grandmother ask, Are you ready to let us take her now, or should we continue with court proceedings?

The girl bursts into tears again and concedes with a nod while gathering the child’s supplies. The grandmother says, I’ll take her. We have all that she needs, don’t trouble yourself. The young mother tearfully surrenders her baby, relinquishing so much more
