I TRACED LITTLE FOOTPRINTS
I TRACED LITTLE FOOTPRINTS
What would you do if your child were at the point of death? Pray? Make a deal with God? Go to the finest doctors and hospitals? Truth of the matter is, you will do everything you can.
I grew up skiing and spending time on the Ouachita River with my family. When I was seven years old, my dad, my sister and I went out on the river with hopes of spending time water skiing. We had planned to pick mom up at the dock for some late afternoon fun time on the beach. After we had been out on the river awhile, we pulled up to a levy that was just across from a convenience store. My sister and I climbed the levy and crossed a road to a small convenience store. The plan was for my sister and me to go up and buy some drinks and snacks, walk back over, and continue the day of fun. My sister and I walked to the store and selected a couple of snacks and began to walk back. Traffic was heavy so we stopped by the road before crossing. I stood a little too close to the road. I put my chocolate soldier between my legs to hold it while I used both hands to open a bag of chips. We were at a bend in the road when a truck came around and swerved to miss oncoming traffic towards me. Since I was bent down he hit me directly in the face. It knocked me forty some feet into the store’s parking lot. As you would guess the damage to my face was extensive. I was still alive, but all the bones on the left side of my head were crushed. My brain began to swell. My nose and eye sockets were crushed. My collarbone and shoulder were broken. It wasn’t good news for a seven-year-old boy.
The next few days were scary for my mom and dad. The doctors didn’t know what to expect. I really shouldn’t be alive. There was little hope if I would make it. If the doctors didn’t do surgery soon to relocate my bones, then I would have major problems for life. So they did everything they could. When they operated they used wire metal and plastic to put my face back together. There was still one big problem. I was in a coma. There were so much debate about what to do with a person in a coma. Do we unplug him? Do we keep hoping? This is not a story that will answer this tough question for you. This is a story of one situation where the right choices were made in spite of not knowing really what to do but just trusting God. Mom and Dad just did the best they could and asked everyone else, even God, to do their best. What did it really come down to … God? I know what you are thinking. This is a touched by an angel story. I am sure you think it is like a story that you hear about on TV. Yep, it is! Except, it’s bigger than words. It’s God’s plan. How can we manipulate death or life? How can we heal one person and the next person die? It’s God! It’s not my wonderful surgeon friends or the incredible advancements in medicine or technology. Although, I thank God for the way that doctors have committed their lives to saving others. It’s God’s
