    A Message from the President/CEO…

Greetings and welcome to this new quarter of uplifting study in God’s Word. The Easter season is an appropriate place to begin a new quarter, as it marks our central reason for celebration—Jesus is risen! By keeping Jesus at the center of our material, we continue our pursuit of excellence in quality and doctrinal truth. For 118 years, we have striven to fulfill the vision of our founder, Dr. R. H. Boyd, to provide you with the best literature for the African-American church.

In this quarter, we continue to focus on the relationship between Jesus and the writings of the Old Testament. This relationship gives us the context for Jesus’ life and mission and grounds our Christian faith. In April, we will look at The Prophets Tell the Future, drawn from the prophetic literature found in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hosea, and Zechariah along with their application in Mark, Luke, and John. These four lessons consider the texts, as found in their original settings, and then how they were fulfilled by Jesus, as recorded in the Gospels.

In May, we will turn to Jesus Uses Scripture. In these four lessons, we focus specifically on Jesus’ understanding of Scripture. These come especially out of Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Psalms, and Isaiah. Jesus’ teachings are found in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

Finally in June, we transition to Building a Community of Believers. These lessons—from Ezra and Haggai to Romans, 2 Corinthians, and Ephesians—address what God expects from the people who believe that Jesus is Lord. The continuity from the Old Testament to the New Testament is demonstrated in God’s continued concern for the holiness and well-being of His people.

All glory and honor to God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—for the blessing of the Word. May He bless you in your studies this quarter.

    In His Service,

    Dr. T. B. Boyd III
    President/CEO

    ADVENTURERS THIS QUARTER

This quarter has three units. The first unit considers how prophecies were fulfilled during Jesus’ ministry, while the second considers Jesus’ teachings on the Old Testament. The third considers God’s expectations for Israel and for the Church.

    Unit I

    The Prophets Tell the Future

Unit I, The Prophets Tell the Future, is a four-lesson study. The first lesson explores how Mark uses Jeremiah’s words about the cleansing of the temple. In the second lesson, John uses Jeremiah and Zechariah to emphasize that Jesus as the Messiah is both Priest and King. The third and fourth lessons come from Luke, who revisits Hosea and Isaiah concerning Jesus’ death and resurrection.

    Unit II

    Jesus Uses Scripture

Unit II, Jesus Uses Scripture, is a four-lesson study which, like the first unit, pairs Scriptures from the Old Testament with Jesus’ teachings. Lesson five out of Matthew points to Jesus’ use of Deuteronomy and Psalms during His temptations. The sixth lesson considers Leviticus and Isaiah in Jesus’ understanding of His mission. In lesson seven, Jesus teaches on the Law generally out of Exodus, while lesson eight is specifically focused on what Jesus stresses are the greatest commandments out of Leviticus and Deuteronomy.

    Unit III

    Building a Community of Believers

Unit III, Building a Community of Believers, is a five-lesson study which comes out of Ezra, Haggai, Romans, 2 Corinthians, and Ephesians. Haggai, Ezra, and Paul all speak about what it means to be God’s people in the world. The ninth lesson focuses on the need to obey. Lesson ten calls us to trust in God’s promises. Holiness is the call explored in lesson eleven. Lesson twelve urges believers to have hope in the future. Lesson thirteen closes the quarter by discussing the importance of unity in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians.
