SIDELINE QUESTION: How has God’s covenant with Abram affected us?

    TODAY’S LESSON

Promises get broken every day. From big promises like till death do us part to small promises like I’ll unload the dishwasher in a minute. Sometimes promises are broken on purpose; the promise was made just to make life easier in the short-term with no intention of following through. Other times the promise was made in good faith, and though the promiser very badly wanted to keep the promise, it didn’t happen.

When God promised Abram that he would have a son, Abram doubted. After all, he was already an old man, and his wife, Sarai, was an old woman. The promise itself was also old. How could they become parents so late in life? Yet, God told Abram that he would still have a son. Abram could have given in to hopelessness and desperation after waiting for almost one hundred years for a child. Instead, he remained faithful because he believed God was willing and able to keep His promise.

    I. Abram’s Faith (Genesis 15:1–6)

God had promised Abram before bringing him out of his homeland that He would make him the father of a great nation, but it was taking a long time. Because Abram and Sarai had gone many years without children, it seemed like God’s promise would never come true. Abram began to worry that he was going to have to leave his house and possessions to his only heir, who was a servant in his house. God appeared to Abram in a vision to reaffirm everything that He had promised him before (see Gen. 12:1–4). He reassured Abram that his heir would be his own son and that he would have as many children as there are stars in the heavens.

Abram continued to believe God even though he had not seen His promises come true yet. Abram’s faith showed God that he trusted Him. If he had lost his faith, Abram would not have pleased the Lord. Instead, he continued to trust God, even when He seemed slow in keeping His promise. This was what God wanted from Abram and it was right for him to remain faithful through the many years he waited to become a father. Like Abram, we should remain steadfast in our trust in God and His promises, even if His timing doesn’t match up with what we might want or expect. He will always keep his promises.
